Elbow down. Standing still. 98% of the contact was due to Aho's momentum / speed which Aho controls, NOT Gio.

If Gio is suspended I suggest Flames players start lowering their heads and running into divisional rivals. Would be great to have Daughty and/or Pavalski suspended because they were standing still and "Hit" us in the head!
Yay, Doughty suspended for a game or two. Boo, Johnny out a month with a concussion.

You realize Aho is legit hurt right? If this was a strategy it doesn't seem to be a good one.

This is easily the most irresponsible suggestion ever. But in the end, I think the spirit of the rules are reasonably clear in that they are intended to reduce head injuries. Giordano's shoulder hit Aho's head VERY hard, and I don't see how his stationary position has any bearing on that.

This is so much easier said than done. People react without thinking or planning their reactions.

Blaming Giordano in this instance is like blaming the boards when a guy loses an edge and crashes into them.

Just to be clear: asserting that Giordano bears some responsibility for his part in the hit and Aho's injury is not the same thing as "blame."

We actually see this a lot when a player observes another player cutting into open ice not looking where they're going.

Aho's reaction of seeing Gio last split-second and instinctively trying to turn away is what happens often and unfortunately that almost always ends in the player having a head or limb moved further into range that gets impacted in a more glancing manner than would have been the case had they not moved.

But the idea the onus needs to fall on the player defending to not hit someone because they're not looking where they're going is the part that gets me here.

What's to stop someone from just looking at their stick / the puck because they know it's going to draw a penalty?

It's an unfortunate sequence, but at the end of the day you have to look where you're going.

I think all of those things lead to the head coming into contact incidental to the hit making the severity of it worse
I generally agree, but all of these things happened inside of maybe two seconds. As much as we like to imagine that NHL players are so good as to make these types of decisions instinctively to protect themselves it is an unrealistic expectation.

You're really calling a lot of things the dumbest lately.

Considering the two seconds you speak of were the result of his calculated decision to cut into the middle with his head down and on backwards, I disagree.

But in that same < 2 seconds the aggressor has time to perfectly plan on where his shoulder is going to hit the opposition?

Aho can't protect himself but Gio certainly can perfectly make contact with ONLY Aho's torso?

Truly amazing how many people on CP were gushing over the Paul Kariya documentaries just a month or so ago ... oh such a great player ... what a travesty his career was cut short ... blah blah blah.

No wonder Kariya just avoids the game completely when - if he followed it - he would have to listen to the justifications written here to suggest Gio's hit isn't a problem or otherwise worthy of sanction.

You want players like Kariya to entertain you ... you have to remove head shots. Period.

We'll have to disagree on this.

Being stationary = not predatory.

Are you suggesting he jump out of the way?

If the situations were anything close to being similar...you would actually have a point.

But they aren't, so you don't.

Yea Corral has moved into the Tinordi drive-by comment realm at this point.

A few pages back his arguments were dissected and he stopped responding.

He's now resorted to outright hyperbole and making blanket statements about overall sentiment which is effectively nothing but pouting at this point.

So no news yet on a hearing or review?

I would think at this point (next day noon MST) that no news is good news for Gio.

Per the NHL, no hearing is scheduled regarding Mark Giordano's match penalty against Carolina on Sunday afternoon. #Flames

With the club off for 6 more days i wouldnt read to much into anything. Gio may not even have been reachable until some time today depending if he took off for warmer climes for a few days or not.

That being said I dont think this even gets a second look from DPS once it had been seen once. The only player that was unsafe is Aho and he is living with the consequences of his lack of safety.
