I agree, but you can see a difference. Having just moved to Vancouver, i've noticed a major difference between how much more openly accepted the gay community is here, compared to Calgary. Actually, having lived in Calgary pretty much all of my life until now, its a bit of a shock how different it is here..i've seen gay couples holding hands walking down the street, not thinking twice about kissing in public, etc...and I've only lived here for 3 months. In 25 years living in Calgary i've never witnessed that kind of thing. Even in terms of things like race, Vancouver is way ahead of the curve. They don't deny minorities at nightclubs here..there are a lot more mixed race couples/families here.

I still love Calgary, and sometimes it does get unfairly branded as redneck, but it is a bit behind the times in some ways.

My point is this - is Calgary behind relative to the majority of Canada, or is Vancouver ahead? I tend to think its the latter, which is to their credit.

I can't can't really say how Calgary compares to other cities..but i'm sure it is behind places like Toronto, Montreal. I have no doubts that Calgary will get there, as the city keeps growing it will have no choice, it's not a small town anymore.

Tewksbury seems like a nice enough guy and all, but it really seems like every interview I hear him in, he finds a way to take a shot at Calgary in one way or another. He really must have some bitterness towards the city.

I don't know about that Jiri. Having lived in Calgary (and obviously been to most places in Alberta, like Edmonton, red deer, etc...and I grew up in a small town), Vancouver and now on the east coast/maritimes, I can tell you that Calgary is the different one out of the bunch. Just based on my experiences, but Calgary is a bit more, well, unaccepting then the 2 other major cities (at opposite ends of the country) that I have lived in, as well as the numerous others that I have visited, etc.
