Haahaha oh... I had no idea you will being literal when I clicked this topic. I was just thinking it'd show all their glory years similar to The Rocket movie. He may have been the first gay maple leaf but he surely wasn't the last.

Oh come on... you knew I wasn't saying that only Calgarians do that. I was pointing out that Calgary is way behind much of the rest of Canada in terms of its attitude toward homosexuality.

Yeah, I agree.
I mean who's to say Calgary is behind the rest of Canada when it comes to views on gays. Stating that we're behind means that eventually we'll change; it's just a matter of time. behind as in less civilized.

Of course it has.

I along with most of my friends have no "western,Calgarianstampeder" issue with gay peoples.
Sure there are probably places that are uncomfortable.
But lots of spots that nobody gives a hoot.
I could be wrong. but it is probably the

Maybe "our" gays are quieter or more conservative.
Who knows?
Calgary's persona looks one dimensional to plenty that haven't experienced it,but I am sure that we are much more tolerant than many expect.

I have much more to complain about ,in Calgary ,if I desire.


A hockey player or any pro sport guy coming out is frowned upon by the sport. And by extension ,us.

But for the sport to face reality it has to allow homosexualty at some levels and that can't be right.
At least I would think not.
Sex and sport might as well argue State and Religion
and never the twain shall mix

So a professional cannot just state his preference because he has been playing within the "pro sport".
Very tough position for any person.
But on a team ,within, a longstanding culture,... forget it.
He hides it ,no doubt. Still very tough.

I'd say Calgary is a bit behind with respect to homosexuality. People tell "queer" jokes here that weren't funny when I was a kid in Ontario 25 years ago. This wouldn't be a city I'd be comfortable in if I was gay.

Perhaps Tewksbury is talking about the image that the Calgary Flames give off? He says specifically, the Calgary Flames, not the citizens of Calgary. Does a gay hockey player fit in with Sutter Style hockey? As an image, not really.

And people need to be less sensitive. There are blond jokes that aren't funny does that make it uncomfortable for blondes? Does that mean we hate blondes? We tell jokes about Irish, Scottish, whatever... does that mean we hate them too? Gimme a friggen break.

Agree completely. I just think Calgary and Alberta in general gets unfairly described as "redneck" far too often.
