Remains to be seen how the players react to it...
sure, it may very well have been staged and is cliche... not unlike the train ride and airing of grievances last year after the Montreal game over beers...
that seemed to work to some degree.
the bigger issues is the disconnect between GG and the team in terms of simple things like effort and being sharp/engaged in practice...which bleeds into games, where the flames seem to be sleepwalking for the first 10 minutes...sure GG takes some blame, but the players are grown men too. Seriously, Do Your GD Job... you're a bubble team, not on top of the Western Conference.
Effort and Urgency and being sharp in practice should not be something GG has to beg for...
whether it's GG, his methodology, his system or the attitude of the players ie entitlement/lack of effort and focus/leadership, there appears to be a bit of a rift...
you can't fire the team, but at the same time there zero guarantees that any new coach will be able to motivate this roster any better than GG, especially if this is a player culture issue.

Meanwhile:
Quote:
Smith: "Our coach doesn't know what anger is. I would have smashed that *^%#% to pieces and then fired it into the press level."
Hrivik: "Coach Glen not happy with play. I try harder tomorrow."
Dougie: "I'm only here to talk about the game".

I really hope the Flames go on a big run because this place has lost it.
What we know about GGs rant in practice is what we saw in the video and nothing more. The coach of an under-performing NHL hockey team had a rant in practice. Not unusual. And certainly nothing that any of us know anything more about, can read anything more into, than what we saw in the freek'n video.

Gulutzan could put all the speculation on his sincerity to rest tonight by scratching Stajan. He could also strip Brouwer of the "A" and give it to someone more deserving. He could also put Gio on notice that his "C" is in jeopardy, if he's not onboard with the program.
But I suspect much of the joking after practice was a embarrassed group trying to shake it off with some levity. Even so, if I were Gulutzan I would be sending a message that it's time to put up or shut up.
Sincere or not, no player wants to answer questions from the media about being called out by their coach during practice, especially when the video circulates.

I haven't weighed in on this yet, but does negative reinforcement work in pro sports?
Personally, I think GG would be better served instilling belief that he will back his players. Even moreso when the media is involved, you keep discipline and criticism behind closed doors as much as possible.
Pressbox Stajan. His career is over. Give Brouwer's A to Gaudreau so he can actually talk to referees. Stop periodically dressing Bartkowski. Stop practicing a garbage powerplay strategy and get something that works.
I didn't like when he called out Gaudreau after a loss, and I don't see this outburst doing much to galvanize his team either. Maybe I'm wrong and they go on a run, who knows.
Or, maybe these guys tell him to pound sand and quit playing his brand of 50/50 hockey, resulting in a winning streak.
I don't know. I'm tired of Gulutzan either way. Beat the damn Oilers Glen. He's used the "we weren't ready" card far too many times. Slam the refs in the postgame presser and take a fine. Show these players you have their backs.

depends... wasn't this Sutter's MO for the most part?
issue is that it can burn people out or players eventually turn it off.
Best example of it working is Bill Bellichick... nobody is above his withering criticism, including Tom Brady, who is often dissected during team film study for the things he did wrong or missed in a game....
New players to "The Patriot Way" are often surprised by Bellichick's criticism of Brady... i remember Randy Moss, when hearing Brady getting ripped by Belichick in a team meeting, thought to himself, "If Brady is getting criticized, then I'd better be extra prepared" or something to that effect.
so it can work, but its dependent on how your stars/veterans/leaders react to that criticism

What is the value in showing them you have their back when they aren't executing?
Why let them off the hook and give them an excuse (like the refs).

The problem is that he doesn't do the opposite either. Bench the ####ers and show them the consequences but nope, roll all 4 lines as per usual 24/7/365.

Which makes the whole point of spazzing out at them basically moot.

I liked Gully getting frustrated, and showing emotion while specifically calling out the veteran leadership that has failed this organization, but I’m with you on this.
Gully calling out Gaudreau for giving it away a few feet into the offensive zone in the 3rd period was my real jumping off point with the coach. It led to a goal against, sure, but it was a giveaway at the offensive blueline - it’s hardly a dire giveaway that didn’t give the team a chance to shut down the opposition’s rush the other way. If he’s going to call out that type of giveaway, it shows just how similar he is to Brent Sutter. “50/50 Hockey” is effectively “Play mistake free 5v5 hockey” and if that’s what he’s demanding, then he’s a bad coach, because it’s not possible.

He was asked a specific question in regard to Gaudreau’s turnover, and he answered it. The turnover was a mistake, very late in the game, which directly led to the winning goal. There’s not much more to it than that.

Giveaways at the offensive blue are often as harmful as at the defensive blue
It was a terrible play and when asked about it his response was accurate and appropriate

Good chance the whole thing was staged, GG and the leaders on the team messing around cause they think it's hilarious that the fan base thinks the fact the coach doesn't lose his cool on the bench is an indication of his coaching abilities. Probably just messing around to see what kind of reaction they can stir up, a team building activity.
Gio and Stajans reaction likely just bad acting job on their part

I was there for this at @NHLFlames practice today and was itching to find the stick and say "Glen, you dropped your stick." But I think just being quiet was a smarter option.
Maybe good advice for CP, too?

|
It was completely planned.
Duhatschek's article in the athletic today does a good job covering it. There was a lot of media at practice looking for Jagr update, among other things, the coach knew this. It was all part of his plan.
Whether it was convincing or not is moot. He called the team out, specifically the veterans, publicly. GG is no rube, it was a calculated move to say to the team 'get your sh*t together'.
