Yes, diving and embellishment are pathetic, and I want them out of the game. But trying to compare that to the medal-tossing incident is laughable.

This. Who cares if he threw a silver medal into the crowd. The world juniors mean little if you ask me.

Well that's a dumb justification. Saying a big tournament that these kids clearly give their all for means very little is ridiculous to excuse the behavior. Players may as well drink beer during the game and shoot each other with pellet guns from the bench.
All good on Weitz' end because it's a silly tournament that means very little if you ask him.

Silver would mean a lot more if there were more than what 5 teams that really have a chance? You don’t win silver you lose for silver in a tournament such as this. Easily understandable that someone doesn’t care for the medal.
But hey all good for you, this tournament built by TSN means something for you.

So you don’t think the players care? This is the best hockey tournament on the planet.

I didn't say anything about my enjoyment of the tournament I was merely suggesting that taking a large scale hockey tournament that these kids clearly play their hearts out for and stating that throwing a medal in the stands is okay because it's a stupid meaningless tournament is just dumb.
To simplify things for you.
- The tournament is clearly very meaningful to the players (including the one who threw the medal)
- You justified the medal throwing by stating it's a meaningless tournament, which is the opposite of why he threw the medal.
The other (likley more accuarte) reasoning for your post is that you simply wanted to state that old Weitz thinks the tournament sucks and used the medal throwing to point out your important declaration. In which case just ignore the thread of the tournament you think is stupid. Sound good?

I think it's fine and absolutely acceptable to feel embarrassed for him. But if one of your teammates did it, or if a Canadian did it if we lost, maybe you feel ashamed in private. Maybe you pull the guy aside and talk to him in the dressing room. I think what should have happened is have the coach talk to the player in the locker room and the player comes out and issues an apology. I think that's the professional way of handling it.
In this case, I remember Ray Ferraro openly criticising Andersson for a solid minute on national television. Then it made headlines on the Sportsnet website and during the replay on TV. And you have fans on the internet openly criticising him.
I know it's a public forum, everyone has rights to voice their opinions, etc. And like I said, what Andersson did was not professional. But to be honest, I feel a little ashamed that we're publicly ragging on this kid while he's down.

Maybe to you, but it means the world to these kids and lots of NA hockey fans. It's a highlight of the season for many of us.

Yeah, you've stated multiple times how little you care for this tournament, yet you still care enough to enter this thread and post yet again how little you care. Well done.

Saying that placing 2nd means nothing to you denigrates the accomplishments of the rest of the team. You'd have to think that this might be the crowning achievement from some of those players in their entire career, and to have their captain disregard that achievement makes it so that they will never be able to really enjoy it.
But it also is disrespectful to the rest of the teams playing in this tournament. You want to believe the Americans would have much rather played in this game than play for bronze. What about all those teams that didn't have a shot at a medal. You better believe they would love to have a shot at silver, let alone gold. I know what you'll say, it's about internal expectations. Fine, but then maybe Lias should have done more to win the game and looked at himself for the loss, rather than throw a tantrum.
But really this means that this kid cannot put his failures in context. Any rational person would simply say, "Well it was a very close game against an amazing opponent, and they scored a nice goal late, and we couldn't get it back in time. It's one game, and anything can happen when it's just one game." Then all you have to realize is that sometimes things go against you when you maybe deserve better, and that all you can control is your effort and preparation.
The fact that none of that was present in his post-game comments shows me that he lacks maturity. I know, "he's only 19", and yet there are other 19 years olds that show plenty of maturity. This is the kind of guy that is probably more disruptive to a locker room than helpful. You need guys that show camaraderie rather than individualism in a team game like hockey.
I'm not saying he's a robot and that he should feel no emotion, but there's a way to handle those emotions that show maturity, and this showed the exact opposite. It's an act that cries, "me, me, me, look how this is affecting me!" and it shows little regard to his teammates and the rest of the players in this tournament.
It's pretty shameful.

It'd be funny if a fan of whatever NHL team he plays for, if he makes it, ended up tossing his jersey onto the ice.

Yes, I agree the coach should have pulled him aside and told him to try and save a bit of face by apologizing even if he didn't really mean it.
My point was that regardless of whether Canada won or lost my view on players throwing medals away in public is the same and that it would be embarrassing had a Canadian did it. I wouldn't lose any sleep over but it's one of those facepalm moments.
I agree some of the criticism is a bit much but I don't have any issues with people pointing out it makes him look bad.

Some Flames prospect news:
Wes Gilbertson @WesGilbertson
#Flames prospect Juuso Vailimaki was playing through injury at the world juniors. Was in Calgary this week to be examined, not major but likely off a couple of weeks.

That's actually good to hear as he didn't look as good as I thought he'd be in this tournament, now I can keep my ridiculously high hopes up for him next training camp.

The reaction to the medal throwing is part of the reason I lost interest in this tournament. Young man loses a game he wanted to win and reacts poorly. Now we all hate him for being "disrespectful" or love him because he "hates to lose".
Maybe he's just a 19 year old who could have acted with more poise and grace. Big whoop. Either he'll regret it some day or not. He threw away something that currently holds no value to him and immaturely did it immediately and publicly. Now I get to turn on TSN and watch 50 year-old men bitch about it. Cool.
"Oh, he needs to act better he's an adult - he can vote". But wait, he can't even get a beer after the game. Now what? Logic implosion? I didn't instantly mature when I turned from 17 years 364 days to 18 years. Still working on it tbh.

So you want to trade the guy who won the gold medal as a captain of his team for a guy who lost it just because he threw away his silver medal?
Dube has a chip on his shoulder as well, read his post draft interview.
I'd like to get Andersson but Dube looks good as well. Wouldn't be surprised if he makes the team next year.
