Outdoor Rinks [MRG]
I know it's only been cold for 2 days now, but it looks like -8 for Thu and by Sat we'll be down to -24.
Can't wait to get out and shoot some pucks, if anyone drives by some of the local outdoor rinks, let us know if they have started flooding.

Hey guys, yea I'm itching to get out there too. However, I don't believe they start flooding the rinks until early dec. It's usually that they want some consistency in the cold weather. As for what I can say on a positive note, the Olympic Plaza downtown has been cordoned off with red tape as the ice flooding and light decoration is beginning. I know your not "officially" allowed to play hockey there, but me and my bro always bring our stuff just in case no one is using the rink. Last year, about 4-8 other guys joined us for several nights, usually from 11:30 p.m. - 1 when regular skaters left on a weekday Christmas season night for some shinny. We used benches for nets, the lighting and ice is great. A really fun place to play with one of the best outdoor ice surfaces in calgary if you are ever up for hockey that time of night.

I go down to Olympic Park once in a while, it's cool but it's a lot more fun when you have boards and a net to shoot at. Do they have an in ground cooling system at Olympic Park? Last Spring the ice stayed in for quite a while.
I remember last year here in Bankview/South Calgary the rink benind Alexander Calhoun Library & the Fire Station on 14th got flooded the day after the temp dropped. He had maybe 3 or 4 days of skating before it got warm again.

Some kids in my neighborhood play on a frozen lake near my house. They play on it even when its not that cold. I'm always worried that they are going to fall in...

If you mean Olympic Plaza, yes, they have an underground cooling system.
Yep, that rink by Calhoun is great. My sons and I hit it a few times last year.

Outdoor Rink Thread
Well outdoor pond hockey season is nearly here so i figured we should get a thread going updating what rinks have ice how good it is and such. Also we can arrange times to play so we can meet a bunch of people from the site. I know signal hill has no ice, springbank has no ice yet either, but apparantly bragg creek does but im not 100% sure. Hopefully this week they will all be up!

I've been out there a lot over the past couple years. I'd show up at 10PM and shoot pucks until the lights turned off around 1AM. Actually, a couple times I stuck around and skated in near dark. The ice isn't the best but yeah. I'll have to scope that rink out today after work.

No idea... I just show up and play any given night... sometimes they have Trails West kids out there, not sure what the schedule is.

Yeah, cause ice time is so scarce in calgary, I think they sometimes practice there.
There is a schedule board outside the zamboni shack, but I totally forgot what times, since i haven't been since early last winter.

Mckenzie Lake also has scheduled practices for little kids. I've found that if a place has scheduled practices they are usually pretty good about listing the times, as they are the same days every week and on the nights they are there it usually takes up the prime time slot before the lights go off.
Haven't seen anything flooded near me, but if I do I can post something.

Drove by the rink behind Alexander Calhoun Library in South Calgary, they havent' done a thing yet. It's all snow.
I know the guy who floods that rink, I'll have to find out if he's still doing it and what they have planned.
