Tell her your quitting and hand her the letter.
If she says you might as well pack up and leave right away she will owe you a weeks pay.

No chance of a buyout is there? Sounds like they are trying to eliminate you and others. Ask your coworkers if they are
planning on leaving too. Maybe you can all get two weeks severance pay.

100% agree with this. Whaddya have to lose? If they go for it, you're "the bad-boy/rebel" and can get away with a couple'a more indiscretions before they punt 'ya. If they don't take you up on the offer, well, they were stuck-up to begin with, and you didn't need 'em in the first place...
Just my 1 cents...

Thanks for all the responses. All of them were pretty much the same. I was just unsure about this. I have never resigned from a real job before.

I am happy that I am leaving the department I am in, but leaving the Company kind of sucks. It is a good company.

Should make for an interesting experience.

Before you hand in your letter, you might want to consider packing all your things with you. Depending on where you are heading to (ie the Competition), they might ask you to leave right away and not give you a chance to pack up everything. I did get 2 week of paid "vacation" tho

Cover all grounds, even tho Calgary is a huge place, ppl talk. Bad things do get around fast.

Oh, and Good luck at your new job.

Well I took MMF's advice and put my letter in an envelope and gave it to my supervisor. It went better than I thought. My supervisor was shocked, but she wished me well and said she was disappointed.

I feel like the monkey is off my back now.

Geez, Sunil, why didn't you send me a PM. I've got a great job waiting for you right here, right now. Any AGI experience? You could always learn.

When did you resign? Kim was pressuring me a little bit last Thursday, trying to get me over to the dark side.

Well, the next day the boss comes in and he's seething. Started ranting about a wet spot in his crotch. Of course the whole shop erupts in hoots of laughter.

Do you have any black people in your office that you could go all Kramer on? That'd get you out of there with some pay just to go away.

One other way to quit your job is to tell them you have been hired on with a competitor; especially if you are in engineering or something like that. They will often tell you to just not come in; but they still have to pay you for your notice period that you gave them.

Just don't get greedy like me; I tried to give them 3 years notice.

I have zero experience with AGI. And the one guy that does here is the next one on his way out.

I am sure Kim was pressuring you. There is a ton of work here....or so she claims....

I could get you a free trip to Denver if you got a job here and wanted to learn AGI. It's not all that hard, as long as you have some kind of competence with computers. Which I'm sure you do.

Let me just say this: I have been working two full time jobs for the last 2 months. I have been with the federal government for 6 years and I thought I would try this job with the provincal government and see how it was. So I have been working both. Altho I was making a tone of money, I decided the new job just didn;t have enough action for me (Not to mention 80 hours a week gets to a person) so I gave them notice last week. I went into my bosses offices and I explained that it wasn't the job for me. He really appreciated the fact that I sat down and talked to him about what I like about the job and what I didn't and also the fact that I could have just walked away only have been working for 2 months. So it worked for me, it might work for you.

That's just not right. Have the decency to at least speak with your boss.

I hate how I left the same company totf is leaving now. I wrote up a resignation letter, sat down in my boss's office and gave it to him, and had a decent conversation with him for half an hour. By the time I had given him my letter, I'd already made up my mind, so he couldn't really say anything to convince me to stay.

I'm doing it completely different now. I've told my boss that I'm shopping around, and the reasons why. I probably won't leave for a month or two, and that should give him time to assess the situation and either make the changes necessary to keep me here (unlikely, his hands are sorta tied with the way the market is right now) or get on with life without me. I've talked to several of the partners regarding my situation as well. My employer has been fair with me for the 2 1/2 years I've been here, I think I owe him the same.

Ya, it also helps him by giving him time to find someone to replace you.

my bad. I thought he said that he had already mentioned it to his boss and was just writting the letter to be official about it.

ignore my previous post. yes, you should talk to your boss about it, and take the letter directly to him/her.
