Is it an indictment of the current Front offices in the league that George McPhee of Erat for Filip Forsberg fame managed to pick a team off the scrapheap and is beating the brakes off the rest of the league?
They just blew the doors off of the team I consider to be the best run in the league. David Poile is probably one of two GMs currently in the league I would hire if I was starting a franchise.
Dale Tallon in particular should probably update his resume. Traded Vegas their current scoring leader and their 3rd leading scorer for a 4th round pick. That's appalling. If BT did that he'd be drawn and quartered.

This season for Vegas may be one of the coolest stories in sports. It also makes you rethink how to build a team.
Gallant must be a helluva coach.

Plus Tallon had a hand in getting rid of Gallant from Fla.

The only other good thing that happened had the Predators losing too. The worst was the Avs winning late in OT over the Jets. Too bad it didn't get to the shootout. The Panthers not continuing their winning streak as the Wild crushed them also ruined the OOT.

I'm stunned Tallon is still employed by an NHL team in any capacity. How many other professions can you be so incompetent and continue in a high position of employment? Doug MacLean got banished from the league for being this bad so I don't know how this guy sticks around.

Tallon actually built a good young team with an awesome coach and then the owner stepped in brought in an analytics guy to run the team and in one year he ripped that team to shreds.

The coach thing isn't on Tallon, but he was already screwing the team up when he was let go.
Gave David Bolland that ridiculous contract
Brutal trade deadline when he gave up 2nd, 3rd, 4th and a 6th for Hudler, Purcell and Kindl.
I think Tallon is a good builder and not sure they they fired him when they did, but it was already starting to deteroriate before he was fired and then the Vegas moves this year are beyond questionable.

I realize firing Gallant wasn't Tallon's decision. But he was president of hockey ops at the time, and went along with going back to being GM and having that mediocre AHL coach/AGM Tom Rowe become a head coach.
ETA:
Don't forget his horrific RFA gaffe as the Hawks GM.
At the end of the day I think Tallon has a good eye for hockey talent, but is terrible at any other aspect of GMing.

Oh please.
2010 3rd overall Erik Gubrannson
2011 3rd overall Jonathan Huberdeau
2013 2nd overall Barkov
2014 1st overall Ekblad
You may as well give Oilers management credit for building a good young team out of perennial losing if you are going to credit Tallon with that. All he's shown is that he can keep a team really bad for a long enough time to accumulate a lot of highly drafted players.

They went from 66 to 91 to 103 points and a division title with a solid young core of Ekblad, Barkov, Huberdeau, Trocheck, Smith, Bjugstad, Petrovic, Kulikov and Gudbranson, none of whom were even 25 years old yet.
Then for some weird reason the owner promoted their AHL head coach to associate GM mid season, then full on GM at the end of the 103 point season. Rowe then went on to make a bunch of questionable moves in the name of analytics and the worst move he made was a panic firing of Gallant after a slow 11-10-1 start. We see how well that's worked out.
I'm not saying Tallon is some world beater, but I doubt they'd be in this big of a mess had he stayed in the GM seat. For starters Gallant would probably still be the coach.

Didn't play last night but the aforementioned Filip Forsberg is out 4-6 weeks with an upper body injury: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/p...r-body-injury/

not really, its an expansion draft with unique rules that have never been seen before. Vegas is also not a very young team, lets be honest they are kinda an accident...competitive this season wasn't the plan. They tried to set themselves up for a massive deadline day haul.

They didn't do anything weird in that off-season after Tallon left except for signing Yandle (who they used to replace Brian Campbell who left).
They traded Kulikov for Pysyk (not sure how this one worked out to be honest).
Signed Marchessault as a free agent which was a steal.
They locked up a bunch of their young guys to long term deals - Ekblad, R.Smith, Trochek.
Signed Reimer to back-up Luongo.
Gave up a prospect to get rid of the Bolland contract.
Really doesn't seem that bad.

Well I don’t know if they are an accident. Maybe to some extent. But you have to wonder about the relative value of elite players and the importance of coaching. Yes they are not young but not really the point here. And the expansion rules helped them but they still were built on other teams castoffs.
Hiw many teams use integrating new players as an excuse for losing?
