Should the NHL consider 4 on 4 as the new standard?
Reading some threads about the general lack of excitement in the game, wondering how this would go over. Sure, going from 5 on 5 4 vs 4 is a big change but players have become so large and physical that the hockey we see now barely resembles the hockey of yore.

I don't think the games problems are due to it being 5 on 5. The problem now is every team plays the same way. The game has almost become too technical and predictable.
The players lack the passion these days as well. I don't have the answer for why it feels that way but if I had to guess it might have something to do with the business side of things. There's so much turnover it's hard to really develop rivalries between teams. Look at the Battle of Alberta for example. It's a joke. Again, I have no evidence to support these claims, just how it appears to be to me. If I'm wrong feeel free to correct me.

I would love it, but my guess is I would be in the vast minority.

The NHLPA would never agree to a 20% cut in jobs.

I have been an advocate of this for years. Won't happen for the reason chummer gave though.

I imagine the PA would have something to say about 4 on 4

It'll never happen, but it would make for a massively more entertaining game. It's just so boring to see blocked shot after blocked shot because there are so many bodies in the way, or teams that clog up the neutral zone so there's never any flow
3on3 OT is the most fun I've had watching hockey since I was a kid, but as a double edged sword it's also shown how terribly slow and crappy standard 5on5 is now

You wouldn't need as many players on the bench as you would now. NHLPA would definitely be against it.

Go back to crappier padding on players. Blocking shots being eliminated sure would be fun.
The % of shot attempts that don't even make it thru is astonishing.

4 on 4 or 3 on 3 can be exciting but I think that before long new problems would arise. They’d be different problems than we have now but could be equally damaging to the excitement of the game or perhaps even worse.
It is so hard to tell if the game would be better long term and there’s no great way to test it because OT isn’t the best representation of what it would look like for a full 60 minutes every night.

3 on 3 is exciting because its next goal wins. Watching that keep away game for 60 minutes would be boring.

It is easier to defend 4 on 4 and 3 on 3 if you're looking to shut down other teams. There are not as many options on the ice, so it's more difficult to find the open man. It would take only a short amount of time to prevent things from being exciting.

Only way I can see it being done is in conjunction with an expansion so it helps mitigate some of the lost jobs.

200' x 85' is simply just not enough space anymore. International ice is the answer.
I actually liked a suggestion Duhatsyuk made: make it like baseball, no size standards. New rinks can be International size ice if they want.

^ cant say I like the idea of an ice size free for all.
To me another problem with 4 v 4 hockey is you would need to play that way almost everywhere - ahl, chl etc, so guys get used to it.
