Of all the bad games, I almost give that one a pass. How many teams lose more than 10 games in a row? It was bound to end as the Flyers had been playing much better leading up to that game and then they went on to win 6 in a row including that one.

So it's not like they came in beat us and then continued being a horrible team.

Where would this team be if Babcock were the coach?

Where would the goals come from? Excluding Jagr, only Monahan, Guadreau, Backlund have ever scored 20 goals.

Yes based on the amount of games that have been inconsistent

Probably in a contender status. Babcock is on another level.

Brouwer and Gio have both scored 20. Frolik is consistently good for 15, and Hamilton is also good for double digits. Tkachuk and Bennett both have at least 20 goal potential, and Ferland is capable of 20 as well. And I'm not sure why you discounted Jagr completely, as he got 16 last year and 27 the year before. He was brought in to score some goals. If he was healthy 15 shouldn't have been a problem.

There is more than enough goal scoring on the team in my opinion. It is supposed to be a defensively tight team with enough offence to put it over the top.

If Babcock was coach I'm confident that top 2 in the Pacific would be a lock.

Not to mention Ferland is hitting 20 easily this year, and Tkachuk may very well hit 20 too.

If he can get special teams going, I'd do it. Dump Cameron and make GG an assistant coach. PK isn't great either though, use Gelinas there instead.

Easy moves.

I think this team is close. They show glimpses of what they can be, just need to be more consistent. They just need to play better at home. If Gulutzan gets fired, the Flames have to find another unproven or retread coach. Will the results be any different? I don't think so. Proven winning coaches are not coming to freeze their butts off in Calgary. Especially if their wife has any say in the matter, it's the reality of the league. Unless the Flames want to pay Mike Babcock type money.

I'm still unsure about Gulutzan. I like some of the things he is doing, but definitely find myself questioning his use of players, and also think he has a hard time making in game adjustments.

Something I've been thinking about for a while, and wanted to see some other peoples opinions on it.
I'm assuming Jagr will be ready to go for Thursday vs the Sharks, so where does he slot in? Having him on the fourth line does not seem like a good fit, and with the 3rd line playing so good, I don't see any point in breaking up that line.
What if we were to try Jagr with Backlund and Frolik, move Tkachuk up to the top line with Monahan, and Gaudreau, and then Ferland goes down to the 4th line with Lazar and Brouwer.

With the top line struggling lately, Tkachuk might be the boost to help get that line going,
I see Jagr as a good fit with Backlund and Frolik, and have a feeling there might be some good chemistry there, it also gives us a little bit more toughness and skill on that fourth line.

Thoughts ?

This has been true since day 1 though... at what point is the trial of getting consistency over?

To me that should be established in games 21-40. The first 10-20 you have your personnel/systems issues, adjustments, etc. as potential excuses.

Your thinking with Jagr isn't wrong but he wouldn't do great with the increased defensive zone starts IMO

On its own it's not bad but add it to the other effortless home games it looks worse.

Ironically I disagree. Defending earlier in your shift is easier than defending later into a shift. Ask yourself three questions:

1) Does Jagr generally have steady defensive zone anticipation and positioning?
2) Can Jagr control defensive zone board battles to hit Backlund or Brodie down the middle with a breakout pass
3) Do you prefer Jagr backchecking late into a shift or carrying the puck into the offensive zone and making a line change while Tkachuk/Backlund deep in the offensive zone?

There should be a poll asking if the current team the way it is now, is it going be any better with another coach. Is this a better team with Smith in net? Times ticking with the new and the young. Time to make a blockbuster trade rather than tinker with the system.
