Yeah, being a female it can be a little tricky in these situations - especially when your friend is in her very hormonal stage of the month .. either she'll feel bad about not having given money for gas and that you had to ask or else she'll be ****ed just because (I'd probably feel bad b/c I always feel bad about everything and never want to step on any toes ... irrational, yes :P)

One time, myself and 5 others decided to drive to thunder in the valley (we were driving from Lethbridge). One girl said she would drive which was good because the rest of us wanted to drink. The problem is, we all meet at her place. My one friend had a fairly new SUV and offered to let her drive it. She says no we have to drive her car if she is driving, so we get into her vehicle....The first thing she does is drive straight to the gas station...because she didn't have any gas and she drives this old beater car that could fit 8 people and has a 8 cylinder engine......she sits in her car and tells my one buddy to fill up the car. Ok fine. The rest of us get out of the car to go buy some snacks.....Buddy finishes filling the car and comes into the station. She sits in her car waiting for us....doesn't come into the gas station to offer to pay for the fuel. (we were all going to chip in any how as we discussed it before we went to her place). So were like ok I guess we are paying.

We get to the location in the Crows Nest Pass. We pull into the spot were we are meeting her friends from another town (we don't know them). Open the trunk to get our beer. We all brought our own beer. She didn;t bring any beer as she said she was just going to drive.....what does she do.....she goes into the trunk and takes 4 beer out of my buddys 12 pack....gives three to her three friends and one for herself. Then she tried to do the same thing with everyone elses beer. Some people are so clueless.....she thought that because she drove....we had to pay for all her gas, which only took half a tank to get there and back, and then drink all our beer.

Needless to say....we never went anywhere with her again.

Next time you pick them up, you should just go to the gas station and proceed to fill your car. Don't necessarily mention anything, unless they offer to pay in which case thank them and take the money and all is done.

If nothing is said, proceed to fill up the car until the gas tank cannot intake more fuel. Then get back in your car and sit there. If it is still silent, take a look at your friends and state that "well geez... SOMEBODY is going to have to pay for this gas......"

Do not drive until they pay.

I don't drive anyone but me around on a daily basis, but gas certainly is expensive and adds up.
I don't know your exact situation, but you could simply just ask, say something like "hey I drive you around everyday, mind throwin some petro my way?"

what I would do is when you need to go somewhere just tell your friends that you can't drive this one since you have no gas. I'm sure they'll offer to throw some in your tank.
Make sure to actually have little gas in your tank when you do this.

that's a girly passive way to do it. pull up, kill the engine, instruct them to "get out your wallets (throw in a derogatory name here)", get out, fill up, collect money, pay, leave

I agree. If you are going to do the "pull into the station" routine, tell them you need gas money before you pump the gas.

It could turn out that one of you buddies gets paid tomorrow, and he would gladly throw in a whole tank of gas for you. Saying it has to be paid forces people, because they know that you can't just put the gas back.

Yikes. A day of friendship with you must be like a day at boot camp.

Fun!

Exactly, if they are your friends you should be able to just say to them "all right you cheap ######s give some gas money for driving your sorry asses around"

If they think you are cheap for asking then just reverse it, they are the ones that won't give you any money for being their personal taxi
