Stop scouting Buffalo.
I really don't like any of the 3 players being discussed for different reasons and don't want to see the team give up prospects or be saddled with overpriced contracts and post apex players.
I really think the Flames are overly conservative when it comes to giving their prospects an opportunity at the NHL level.
Rittich > Lack
Janko > many players
Hathaway > Lazar
Give the youth a chance to show what they can do.

Tkachuk-Monahan-Gaudreau
Ferland-Backlund-Frolik
Bennett-Jankowski-Hathaway
Scrubs-Jagr
They continue to waste Tkachuk os a defence first line.

good line to learn the defensive part of the game for his development

His last 3 years in NY: .876 PPG
His 1 1/2 years in Buffalo: .608 PPG
He is now putting up Backlund type numbers (without the high-end defensive centerman part) and yet people would consider giving up assets for him. Yet other people wouldn't give that same money to Backlund, not having to give up assets, and Backlund is younger.
Personally, I have absolutely no interest in Okposo at $6M, even if we got him for free.
|
I think Johnny can prop up Okposo just as well as Tavares did. I'd consider something like Okposo w/2-3M retained each season + Reinhart for Fox and Ferland.
Gaudreau - Monahan - Okposo
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Bennett - Jankowski - Reinhart
Brouwer - Stajan - Jagr
Okposo is a rh shot and can play the versteeg's position on the PP. And I love the potential of that third line. Okposo is probably a better offensive player than Ferland but we lose some grit, which I think can be off-set by putting Hathaway in the lineup and scratching Brouwer or something.
Might have to wait closer to the deadline or send back someone else for salary cap to work out.

I agree with the concepts of your post, however Hathaway is 4 years older than Lazar

No thanks. If this guy is really that good and will be able to help the team, then how come the two teams Jets(past) and Sabres(currently) haven't had any success with him in the lineup. No doubt he is talented but his ego is probably so big that rubs the other players the wrong way. I would rather see the Flames test out some of our good prospects like Mangiapanne and such. I also don't want to give up too much on this guy.

I don't want to give up anything for Kane. If we really think he can help us then pony up in free agency. I don't care if we lose out because someone else overpays either. Reasonable contract or move along.

Someone remind me where Hathaway was playing four years ago? Lazar was probably not the wisest use of a 2nd round pick for Treliving but he still has time to make something of an NHL career.

I want to give up a lot for Kane. I’m hoping for a Kane and ROR for Backlund, Brouwer, Brodie, and a pick swap. I hate the letter B and want them gone. I think the money works too. Crazy retool of the roster on the fly. Plus then we get Anderson is the lineup each night, it’s like Christmas in December.

I'm okay with kicking the tires on Kane, but not interested in him...not even as a UFA.

Buffalo would have zero interest in an unsigned Backlund, when they already have a signed ROR.
They can get great value assets (high draft picks, good prospects) for Kane alone, they are not looking for unsigned UFA's to be and cap dumps.
They would likely have interest in Brodie though.

I was thinking about crappy "B" players earlier this month. To go with Brodie and Brouwer you can throw in Bartkowski and remember that we bought-out Bouma.
And although I've always been a fan, Bennett was getting a fair amount of heat in Nov too.
The letter "B" is just cursed! Backlund bucked the trend! LOL!
Seriously though -> we gotta keep Brodie, Bennett and Backlund!

I would be targeting Sam Reinhart from Buffalo. Big right shooting center that can probably shift over to the wing. Would look pretty damn good along side Bennett and Jankowski for a future 2nd line. Another guy out there that I would be interested in would be Stone from Ottawa, but acquisition cost would be stiff. Might be able to pick up Reinhart for a middle end roster player and a couple of our prospects.

Haha, those are two bizarre wants in the same post, there's a grand canyon between them.
One of the best young forwards in the game who most assuredly won't be available and would cost the moon if he was and a second overall pick who's looking like a huge bust so far and would likely not give us anything more than a bottom sixer.

The price would be steep for both players IMO. Reinhart would cost either Bennett or Janko. Stone would require massive overpayment, think Dougie Hamilton + Bennett.

Reinhart at a discount would be pretty good imo. I saw on HF a buffalo fan wanted a mid first and a B prospect.
Not sure what it would actually take. Similar to Flames fans opinion on Bennett I don’t see Buffalo rushing to dump their former 2nd overall pick for peanuts.
What would the Flames need to add to Gillies and Fox for Reinhart?

Dougie + Sam?
Get real. Stone is a stud but that is insane.
Imo Dougie Hamilton is a premiere asset and at best it would be one for one. Top pair RHD scored 50ptd last year signed for 3 more years and is younger than Stone who needs to be paid soon and will cost at least Gaudreau money. Bennett over the past 15 games is starting to look like a former 4th overall pick. His note tial is still very high. Extremely good chance that trade would blow up in Calgary’s face

Why would the Flames trade Bennett or Jankowski for Reinhart? What can he do that the Flames duo couldn't? Jankowski is bigger and Bennett has sand paper. If I'm the Flames, it will be a BIG no, you can have your Sam, we'll keep ours, thank you very much.

imo Janko>Reinhart so that's a big no from me. From what I've watched Reinhart is very much a floater, could be wrong as that's just my opinion from limited viewings
