Loved this comment from the NHL recap:
"Just Brouwer, a forward standing flat-footed and you try him one-on-one," Schenn said.
I think that is a perfect nickname for Brouwer! "Just Brouwer"

I have been burned by this in the past when the early game runs long and cuts into the Flames broadcast. Now whenever it is being aired on more than one station I always record both - saved my sanity last night.

Truly not a lot to complain about there. Yes he got caught flat footed last night, that happens.

Since your November 20th date: goals allowed while on the ice on the PK (forwards)
Brouwer 5 goals in 24 minutes
Stajan 3 goals in 17 minutes
Frolik 1 goal in 33 minutes (also on-ice for a SHG so even goal differential)
Backlund 1 goal in 36 minutes (also on-ice for a SHG so even goal differential)
Monahan 1 goal in 11 minutes
Jankowski 1 goal in 14 minutes
Bennett 0 goals in 14 minutes
Hathaway 0 goals in 6 minutes
No one else has more than 2 minutes on the PK.
Pretty clear which pair is the weak link.

A fair point to those people who PVR'd the game on 360. Too bad the technology isn't there to automatically tune in the same broadcast on another channel.

Brouwer gets the all blame there but Gio & Stone needs to provide better support there too.
Gio is Flat footed, and pushed up, covering a forward who is also at standstill and harmless at blueline when he should be the d-man back helping support on the puck carrier.
And if Gio is supposed to push up there then Stone needs to drift closer to the center ice to make sure there is no coverage. For whatever reason though you had Brouwer & Gio both flat footed standing up at the blueline with Schenn coming flying into the zone and nobody behind them.

Brouwer's nickname has been previously established: "Shankapotamous"

Yeah the only problem I have with that nickname is that it implies that Brouwer is in a location where he has the opportunity to do something useful and then he shanks it. He isn't even getting to locations where he has the opportunity to "shank" it anymore.

They've been taking about trying to stop zone entry as that's what lead to all the poor Pk's before. Not sure 4 guys standing still is the best way though.
It's not a bad idea to force the other team into a one on one to gain the zone though , the best PK teams do that

FYI: SNW is rebroadcasting last night's game as we speak. It is presently 1–0 with 8 mins left in the first period!
On another note while watching this game, I noticed that the Blues had the first five (relatively harmless) shots on goal through the first five mins.
This means that through 55 mins the Flames outshot the Blues 33–17.

I think Hrudey mentioned it last night as well but Bennett has really improved in his zone entries. Earlier you would see him try to stickhandle past guys and he was just getting shut down. Or he could get past the first guy but the play would soon die thereafter.
Last night he was able to walk it in but also he made great plays to start offense. Clearly its confidence but its great to see him display those driving/carrying the line attributes.
He's always been tenacious and played hard - the hard skill but his finesse game is really coming around too. Just an amazing array of skills he brings.

Jagr has paid a lot of attention to assisting Bennett with his game. I think he's given him a confidence boost too.

Also Gio's one timer from Frolik.
Flames also got the Sharks' backup Dell, who just happens to have way better numbers than Martin Jones.

Look I get he isnt our best option, but you cant play all your top guys in every situation without completely burning them out. The PK has been very good for a month...he is part of that PK even if he is the weakest part of it. That's just how hockey works.
Last nights goal against was very odd looking all around as i am not sure what any of the gys on the ice were doing, but Brouwer certainly got his jock handed to him by Schenn so it looked horrible for him.

I look forward to Stajan, Jagr and Versteeg's contracts expiring, as well as Brouwer hopefully being bought out.
Will allow the Flames to rebuild the 4th line with youth and speed next season.
With what looks to be an emerging Janko/Bennett pairing up front, the top 9 look set for the future providing Backlund can be re-signed.
For the near term however, it would sure be nice to have the top line break out of their current funk.

Wouldn't that be nice! However, I'd be incredibly surprised if this management group doesn't blow its wad on another slower, overpaid veteran to anchor that line again anyway.

Brouwer and Stajan are pretty bad on the PK. I think Stajan is worse than Brouwer but they're both bad. Stajan should not be in the NHL anymore, never mind playing special teams.
They are totally lucky they don't have a bunch more goals scored against them. Don't need to see those stats to tell me that they are the weak link, the eye test confirms how sub par they are every time they're out there.

So you are telling us that Backlund and Frolik are better than Stajan and Brouwer? What a surprise!
I don't think the guys with less minutes even come into it - their time is too limited, so they wouldn't have played against the same teams, whereas the top four guys would have. I do think Jankowski is a natural PKer with his size, reach and hands, and Bennett was great last night, so I'm not fussed about putting them out there instead. I think, however, that Brouwer and Stajan do OK on the PK.

transplant has a point though. Regardless what you think of them, at some point good players have to rest. It's not quite like my EA Sports NHL videogame where I can keep line 1 on the ice for 60 minutes if I choose.
Thing I don't get about Brouwer is that his speed isn't all that bad really. He seems to show flashes of caring. So what is it? Just his head's not in it?
I'd like to see more from him in terms of tenacity, assertiveness, physicality and blocking shots / getting in lanes. He seems like one of those guys that once he got the big contract, called it a day and doesn't want to put the same work in anymore or put his body at risk.
If he's getting big minutes on the PK, he needs to be more like Stephane Yelle. Block shots and put your body at risk more. The fans will respect you a whole hell of a lot more that's for sure. It's how Bouma became popular before he got paid and decided it wasn't worth it anymore either.
