I don't think he is saying play for the tie...just don't take unnecessary risks. It wasn't a great play however, goalie needs to make a save

Playing for the tie was exactly the right thing to do at that stage in the game. If Gaudreau gets the puck deep we very likely get at least a point. What the heck are you even arguing? GG is a dumb dumb face?

Nothing wrong with playing safe when points are so valuable in my opinion.
The second they tied it, my only thought was "get at least one."
While they were the better team in the third, I didn't think they were dominating especially after the 2-2 goal. San Jose had some decent shifts after 2-2 goal.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Pardon the football analogies mixed in:
Prevent defense with 2:30 to go? And they couldn't even hold the line when the Sharks took the puck from Gaudreau, and that occured in all of what, 10 seconds?

Assuming JG had no great passing options, plan A would have been dump, get the puck, and set up for a chance. Plan B is dump, pressure and try to get a recovery when the Sharks try to break out. I don't think, with 3 minutes left, it was dump and just try and pin the puck for the rest of the game. What GG is saying is that you don't take unnecessary risks at that point, especially given your success in 3 on 3.
|
Agreed. And I believe it was Jermaine Franklin who specifically asked him about that play, so he has to answer. And Jankowski and Hathaway were deep.
And watching the presser, his analysis of the game was quite spot on, funnily enough...

GG: It was fine, he's trying to make a play and he was hooked, you all saw it
Reporter: I didn't see a hook
GG: That's why you are a reporter.

Yeah, because that does any good whatsoever.
He's right on what he said, Johnny made two mistakes, one was the comeback and one was sweeping the puck to the middle of the ice, he should know better after all this time in the NHL, you don't put the puck to the middle of the ice blindly, especially when your not supported.
A penalty doesn't get called, bleating to the media about it does nothing, except maybe ensure that you get less calls from the officials.
Every one complains about GG being this un-emotional robot, but in this case he called out Johnny for what was not a selfish play, but a stupid play.

You can read what he said that way for sure, when he says "we needed to take that to OT" but it's pretty clear he meant that, when tied with two minutes left, you can't throw away the one point. It's more like "we at least needed to go to OT".

That's exactly what he was saying and he was completely right.
And Johnny needs to know better especially in putting the puck blindly into the middle when he's completely surrounded.
And you're right, Smith needs to make that save,

To continue your analogy: Not a prevent defence, but more run the ball, run the clock, and if you can bust one, great, but don’t throw into double coverage...

If you're talking about last nights game it was pretty even. You can out shoot out chance all day but at the end of the day its about the W.

How is Gaudreau coughing up the puck any different than Ferland who got his pocket picked leading to the Sharks first goal?

Believe me, I've read the article and understand the context he was stating in. If you're trying to defend GG by indicating he meant this instead of what he literally said, that's fine, but I'm just going to fundamentally disagree.

The time on the clock and the situation the team was in.

He was frustrated with throwing away a point just like we all were right then. Like I said add "at least" to his sentence. Which is pretty reasonable in a live interview - people speak in shorthand all the time.

Watch the video if you haven’t, as it gives a better flow than just reading a quote. It was a specific answer to a specific question. And yes, at that point in the game, it is more important to not lose than it is to win. Again, at that point in the game.

What he literally said was "we need to take it to OT" which is true. And if they won in regulation, even better. Johnny's mistake got them neither.

I don't buy that at all unless you want players like Johnny to just dump the puck deep and sit back in the 3rd period and play for the tie. We all know fans hate it when teams play for a tie so I'm certainly not going to accept that as a basis to support Gulutzan calling out one player for a team loss. This wasn't a defenseman taking a risky pinch to try and create a rush. It was a forward at the middle of the ice trying to skate the puck up ice. There were two forwards and two defensemen between the puck and the net when he lost the puck and the resulting turnover should have never resulted in a goal in the first place so blaming him is just silly.

Get the puck deep and cycle...like Saturday night. Obviously take a chance if it presents itself. Every team in the league wants to play it safe at that point in the game. Don't like it? Blame Gary not GG.
Any NHL coach will tell you the same thing, there is a reason so many games go to OT.
