Chuckie - in front of net
Monahan - up top
Johnny - half boards
PP2
Hamilton - slapper

The PP fails because we almost never get set up if we don't win the faceoff. Gaining the zone with possession is 100% built around Gaudreau. Then when we do get set up we don't put the puck to players in dangerous positions, but instead we opt to shoot through the crease for a tip, rebound, or whatever.
Gotta makes some big changes to the personnel and strategy as neither are working.

I'm not suggesting the only problem with the pp is Brouwer, but he DEFINITELY is not part of the solution, and that's been clear for months now. You're right about that Toronto goal and the guys on Fan960 were borderline embarrassingly over-the-top with the goal call as I was listening and my rolling eyes almost fell out of my head. They just couldn't stop tripping over themselves to point out about the intelligent choice for Brouwer as a screen.
You point out that setting up has been a struggle, and I agree. Brouwer may be the worst player on the team for gaining the zone with the puck sans a dump-in. That's because he doesn't handle the puck very well nor is he playing with any confidence. Which speaking of, confidence is just one of those intangible attributes you kind of want on the powerplay.
Brouwer doesn't move the puck quickly, and he never really seems like he's properly in position. But I'll grant you that sometimes nobody else does either, which also leads to a tough time setting up. But what if that extra man was somebody not useless, like any of those guys on the 3M line, or even a confident youngster like Jankowski? Stone's cannon on the PP, he really does have a great shot.
But it does call for criticism that arguably your worst offensive player has been continually placed on the PP to create screens for goals but in the meantime you can't even get set up, and he's not helping in that department.
Dude can't gain the zone, can't handle the puck, and isn't confident. He is not a part of the PP solution and that's been obvious for an extremely long time in the context of a season.

It's hard to even care anymore. Games are no longer fun to watch and it's plain as day that this team is headed straight for another lackluster season to go along with the last 30, with no help coming at the draft.
I find I'm spending more and more of my time on this site on the Off Topic forum and not actually paying attention to the Flames so much anymore. There's only so much mediocrity and disappointment one can take.

I worded is lazily, I heard him say, with a chip on his shoulder I might add, that most goals are not scored from the point. Whoever asked him the question was pretty much getting lectured how GG had seen 100K PP goals scored and the point shots were not that valuable.
The fan 960 guys were trying not to laugh. They do that more and more, not long before they go off on GG's stupidity.

Then who do you pin it on? Our first line has no RW and every line beneath them is playing a spot higher than they should be because all our money is in our backend. We need the D to be elite or we aren’t going to be anything more than a bubble team. Our goalie is playing to his price tag, our forwards are playing to their price tag, our D isn’t even close.

The only problem is that Cameron was the coach that drew up plays, and we all know how offensive minded he is.

I like this a lot, but I think Ferland needs to be on PP1 (when he's feeling it). Ferland is 2nd on the team in PPGs with 4. Monahan has 7.
I'd put Ferly in Tkachuk's spot in your PP1, and Tkachuk in front on PP2. I guess Janko is the odd man out if Jagr is in.

For some reason the players feel they have to put on a show for the fans while playing at home and as a result the forwards are often cheating or trying to create too much.
They play a simpler game on the road with an emphasis on team defence.

Our PP for the whole season has been garbage, yet they keep trying the same thing over and over and over and over again. Maddening.
Tkachuk needs to play on an offensive line. He can be so much more productive.
4 line got praise from the radio and tv guys, not sure what they're watching,
Bennett / Janko were solid as well.
Rittich in next game. Scratch Ferland. 4th line is a lost cause, no point trying to change them.

How was Backlund awful? Most of this I agreed with.

Cameron was probably just asking the players for advice finding his way out of the parking lot after the game

If Cameron does PP, Jerrard does PK. And Cameron draws up plays on an offensive timeout, what exactly does Gulutzan do?

Yep, I agree with all of that.
I think the PP arrangement needs a massive overhaul in personnel and strategy. Brodie rushing to the blueline to swing the puck back to Johnny doesn't work when we ONLY do it because if Johnny gets squeezed off he either flips it over to Monahan who has to then make a tough play under pressure, or Johnny dumps it in and tries to win the puck back which is a very tall order for him usually.
Taking Brouwer off and subbing someone else in will not improve things with the current strategy. We've seen Janko instead with no improvement because he's not effective in that "Versteeg" role either.
Putting Stone on the point seems like such an obvious concept for several reasons. The main one being his willingness to shoot (especially one timers). Even if we put him on and he never scored with a shot, his very presence forces the opponent's PK to change to try and prevent those shots, which creates time and space for the other 4 Flames out there...
We saw the Flames click on the PP last year around the big win in CBJ, and it was obviously largely because of how Versteeg changed things. Problem is that Versteeg is out now, we need to change things up because that strategy does not work without Versteeg whatsoever.

This team simply does not work well under the type of system that Glen Gulutzan uses because it does not account for the player's strengths. Certain players play well when using their physicality. If they don't they struggle. Brouwer was always a bit of a disturber like Tkachuk is, but since coming to town, he's been playing a passive game and he's been terrible. Lazar, Ferland, Hathaway, Bennett, Brouwer, Tkachuk, and Hamonic are all players that use physicality in their game. None engage physically on a regular basis other than Tkachuk.
The Flames are made up of a lot of truculent players, yet only Tkachuk plays that way with any consistency. If you've got hitters, let them hit.
Things won't change until either the coach changes his style to accommodate the team or the team changes the coach to accommodate the team.
Until then, enjoy the waffling mediocrity.
At least last year the team had an excuse as they were playing only 3 NHL D-men for half the year.
|
I’m confused. The system lets Tkachuk play physical but nobody else?

Could have fooled me. I fall asleep most night there even on the odd occasion that they win. Glad I didn’t head over tonight after work. Worked late and Thought about heading over as it was only intermission. The right choice was made.

Scoring Winger

I have read 100s of posts on CP since the beginning of the season begging, wishing, pleading for old Glue Gun to juggle his lines and find some chemistry when things aren't going well. What do you know, 32 games in, he finally does it and we get some jump late in the game.
Perhaps by game 50 we might see Brouwer off the PP.
Frustrating coach to say the least.
