Default Why the Internet Turned Against a Bullied Kid (Keaton Jones)

Surprised there's no thread about this yet. But if there is, mods please delete

Quote:
You’ve probably already seen the video that Keaton Jones’ mother uploaded to Facebook last Friday. In it, the Tennessee boy speaks directly to the camera she's wielding, explaining that a group of other boys had called him ugly and poured milk on him. “What’s the point of it? Why do you find joy in taking innocent people and finding a way to be mean them?” Jones asks, seemingly choking back tears. “People that are different don’t need to be criticized about it.”

Fast as support for Jones came, the backlash quickly outpaced it. Some called attention to social media posts in which Jones and his family members appeared to pose with confederate flags. While many of those posts would eventually prove fake, Jones’ mother Kimberly confirmed that a few of the images were real. Meanwhile, other scammers and impersonators attempted to capitalize on the Jones’ sudden fame, soliciting PayPal donations and creating alternate GoFundMe pages. As the controversy grew, Lam paused his own campaign, writing in an update, “ Im [sic] in touch with [GoFundMe] on how to proceed at this point.”

This story demonstrates every pathology of social media culture. The compulsion to take something private and broadcast it? Check. The insincere posturing of celebrities? Check. A reversal when investigation shows the protagonist might be morally compromised or belong to the other tribe? Check. Shaming? Check. Polarized partisanship? Check. Dubious GoFundMe campaigns? Check. Fake news? Check. Will be forgotten by everyone in a couple months except those lynched by the mob? Of course.

When nobody knows who you actually are, its easy to become a full fledged a$$, it also gives you the god like belief that your views are the only views.

the Internet was originally created to share information, then it became about the porn, then it became about a mix of anonymous sjw and bullies who finally have a way of letting their inner jerk fly without getting punched in the face and having your underwear pulled over your head.

The story here is a child who has some unusual features and mannerisms compared to the norm gets bullied in school, and that is completely heartbreaking.

Physical disadvantages aside, this kid has awful parents. Both are white supremacists and his dad is in jail.

The child needs support in part so he doesn't follow in the footsteps of his family, if that's possible.

There is so much irony with this video of the child, recorded by his mom, lamenting to her that he is being picked on because he is different. And his mom thinks that's wrong. His racist mom, who thinks people of different skin colour should be shunned or worse.

I feel badly for this child. Not just because he is bullied, but because the family raising him is likely to cause him even greater disadvantages.

As you know, gods get power from people's worship, so it may have been used to fuel Confederate Jesus.

Yes this kids parents seem to have horrible views. That doesn't mean we should turn around and join in on the bullying of him. He is still a kid and shouldn't be held responsible for his parents views. How many of us have relatives who's views would be considered beyond the pale?

Yup, they make themselves as bad or worse then the parents.

Its almost like kid is bullied in school, everyone runs to the rescue

Parents are racists, everyone jumps on the you phony piece of S%%% brigade.

Kid ends up suffering more.

Congratulations, we're going to destroy the parents via the kid.

Here's my problem, it seems like no matter the tragedy, everyone rushes out to set up a gofundme page.

My kitten died . . . give me money

My laptop died . . . give me money

Some mean girls made fun of me . . . gofundme

I posted this song that I wrote and played on my crappy guitar and got a bunch of dislikes . . . gofundme

I had a bad day and want to sit in the dark and eat ice cream . . . gofundme.

Apologies, but is the only evidence she is racist the confederate flag stuff or is there other? If it's just the confederate flag she could just ignorant.

I'm always pretty skeptical when parents record their kids in moments like that.

Milkshake Duck Explained:

https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/12/...milkshake-duck

Quote:
To those who follow such things, this week’s internet backlash looks oddly familiar. Keaton Jones, a boy from Knoxville, Tennessee, went viral earlier this week when he tearfully protested the unkindness of school bullies in a video his mom shared online. As celebrities lined up to commiserate with him, offering him perks like a trip to the next Avengers premiere, skeptics dug a little deeper into the situation and realized Keaton’s family was kinda racist.

Keaton’s swift viral rise and subsequent fall is one we’ve seen before in the age of social media, and in the past year or so in particular. We’ve seen it so often, in fact, that there’s a name for it, one as confusing as the phenomenon itself: Milkshake Duck.

Keaton's father, and I assume her ex-bf/husband, is a white supremacist with "Pure Breed" and "White Pride" on his chest.

While the mother claims that she only posed with the Confederate flag as a joke, her choice in men would suggest otherwise.

That's pretty typical though of someone in an american prison. They segregate into racial groups for self preservation because of the huge gang issue.

Just want to point out that the mother did not set up the GoFundMe. It was set up by Joseph Lam, who didn't even know the family, because he was touched by the video and wanted to raise college funds for Keaton.

Keaton's Mom had nothing to do with it.

I thought there was a story the bullied boy was bullying black boys at school and calling them the N-word?

From what I've read, that rumor was started on Twitter. There's no proof whatsoever that it's true that I've seen.

I once submitted a Kickstarter for $100,000,000 with the goal of buying the Oilers from Katz. If you pledged me $10K, you got to fire your choice of MacT, Lowe and Eakins from your choice of Skype, Hangouts or Facetime.

Alas, it was not approved.

Alas alas, shame on everyone who doesn't understand the most important part of this whole thing is still the crying little boy.

This kid is worse off now, He rose up and everyone knows him for being bullied no one will want to mess with him now. Then his support dropped fast and he was left with even more reasons for kids to mess with him and not just the ones that he was complaining about.
