The Bob Hartley that hasn’t had a sniff of a job anywhere else since?
Not too many players shed a tear when he was gone.
He wasn’t the long term solution either.
Treliving would’ve let him go if they didn’t make the playoffs that year (via his yell and curse and beat with a stick methods) and as a result, the coaches he likely had in the radar that offseason would’ve been a lot different than were available the next offseason when GG was hired.

And the main argument everyone goes to for Hartley was that everyone's possession game was crap under him, but all our young guys are two years more experienced since he was fired, is it foolish to think they could have improved their possession game even under Hartley by this point? Plus what could it have been like if Haryley was provided real goaltending?

I agree. Calgary played like crap, but turned it on for a mere ten minutes and almost erased a 5 goal deficit. Edmonton's team is a mess and the Flames made them look better than they were today.

I'd like to see Hrivik and Mangiapane get a chance. I want more energy and speed. I can live with mistakes if it's coming from fast players who can make a difference.

I'm not sure it's realistic to expect a coaching change from Treliving.
Isn't Hartley still on the payroll? Have to remember making a change would require ownership approval to have 2 ex-coaches collecting paycheques in addition to whatever new name they bring in.
I think Treliving might be tied to Gulutzan do or die.

No come on, he should be judged, found guilty, and executed, less than two months into his first season with a new team in a new conference.
-Brodie has off ice things this offseason that seem to be creeping into on ice play.
-Gio’s giving it his all each game.
-No issue with Stone.
-Kulak needs some more time and conditioning and a bit more nastiness.
-Hamonic has looked average but has proven he has more to offer up front and his toughness and physicality is fine st this point.
-Bart....
-Hamilton is the biggest concern, not hard on the puck or on his man, floating out there and getting picked up by Gio most shifts. Good talent and skill if he uses it, but looking completely disinterested from pushing himself to any sort of physical limit.
The X factor here too, as discussed ad nauseum tonight, is the coaching direction these guys are getting from GG and Jerrard.

In Dec 2014, we signed Hartley to a two year extension. His contract should have expired at the end of last season.

Sick of people posting this. The best season of Brodie's career came when those off-ice issues first came into the picture. While I'm sure there is some effect to his life, it's also just as possible his fiance is getting by just fine, not unlike our own goalie coach. We really don't know, so it's all speculation and honestly a bit insensitive to constantly mention the way it usually is.
The main thing that changed from 2015-16 to now is the coach, and that's no speculation, because Gulutzan clearly uses Brodie in a different manner from when he was playing like a top ten defenseman in the world.

Thanks for the clarification.
I'm guessing the owners would still be unwilling to pay yet another coach to not work for the team.
Likewise, I'm not sure Darryl Sutter would be interested in coming back here after getting fired for those hoping for his return.

I really think trading one of Brodie and Hamilton for a defenseman who's as good defensively as they are offensively would do wonders.

I agree with everyone's assessment on Hamilton. He takes the most stupid personalities on the blue line. Far too often, he just taps his stick and calls for the puck then just whips it at the net before any guys can get to the front of the net. He's super soft, and loses almost every battle along the boards. If it was for Gio covering up his mistakes, his stat line would be pretty brutal.

Who says he's been looking?
He is getting paid millions to stay home.

I would gladly welcome a trade for any OFD for a straight up DFD.

That sequence by Hamilton on the powerplay late in the game was just shameful. So casual. Looked like he was thinking about where he was going to go out after the game. Sucked all the air out of the flames momentum. God the prospects on the farm can't develop soon enough.

In addition to her continued fighting of the disease, I also meant his actually getting married this past offseason, and all that brings.
And yes, agreed that the coaching has something to do with the mental lapses too.

Yeah this goes all the way back to the 80's when the oilers were always beating the Flames. They would taunt us over and over until it finally blew up in their faces and ended with Steve Smith scoring on himself. You know it, but Gretzky has probably told the guys up north why they have to beat us every single time. It's personal and GG doesn't seem to grasp this aspect of why we have to beat the oilers. It be one thing if we lost a hard fought game but it seems we are coming up flat every single game we have lost.
GG needs to wake up and get with the program!
It's not personal to the Flames because if it was they would be fighting a lot harder.

I've been a fairly staunch defender of GG these past two years. But it's becoming clear that it's time to find a new coach.

That long power play in the first period was a killer. Ya know what the Blues or Kings would have done to a fragile team, with an historically bad PK like the Oilers?
They would have stepped on their throats and scored a goal or two. They would have put them away and never looked back.

Well, who knows though, how many years are left on GG's deal, is that known info? If he expires this year or even next, they might consider it.
Sutter might consider the job, the team is under pretty different management, plus he wouldn't be returning to a GM role, he'd be doing what he has always done best and that's coaching. He'd be coaching right near his home again too which is always a positive attraction.
