Love it for NJ. They've been rocking some really great trades this year.

Henrique is a solid 2 way player, and makes the ducks deep at center when injured players return.
I hope that calgary takes note on moving assets when a defenseman is ready for the show.

Still, losing Theodore to Vegas and now Vatanen really depletes the depth of that defensive core.

They also have have Larsson, who is a top prospect and ready to step in, by all accounts.

I agree, only with the condition that we are trading a defenseman to allow us to focus on another need (secondary scoring option, preferably in the top 6).

I was watching the Panthers play the Devils the other night, and the broadcast team was discussing how both coaching and management wanted more out of Henrique, and that he was also dropped in the lineup in recent games as well.
Sounds like he had fallen out of favor in NJ and they were ready to move on. Getting Vatanen back is a huge win for a team that still needs some better quality NHL defensemen.

The conditions for the draft pick acquired by the Devils are as follows:
• If Anaheim signs Henrique to a new Standard Player Contract for 2019-20 prior to their own third-round pick of the 2019 Draft, Anaheim will transfer their own third-round pick in the 2019 Draft to New Jersey.
• If Anaheim signs Henrique to a new Standard Player Contract for 2019-20 after their own third-round pick of the 2019 Draft, Anaheim will transfer their own third-round pick in the 2020 Draft to New Jersey.
• If Henrique does not re-sign with Anaheim, no pick will be exchanged.

So a third if they re-sign Henrique.

Ducks are a desperate team riddled with injuries down center and Shero took full advantage. A big win for the Devils in my book.

Ducks cap Management: You don't pay 5 defensemen top-4 money.
Next year:
Fowler 6.5, Lindholm 5.2, Manson 4.1 and Montour RFA either 4x4 or 3x2 bridge for next year and the next 4 years. add 3 guys at a million each and you look at 22.8 for their defense.
And the Ducks have their 2018 1st round pick should they want to build their prospect pool.
Flames
Gio 6.75 Hamilton 5.75, Brodie 4.65 Hamonic 3.9 Stone 3.5 and a couple of guys at 1M each. 26.5
Who has a better defense for the next 3 years??
Who would other teams want off the Flames without the Flames retaining cap?
IMHO it would be Brodie.

Without retaining cap? Hamonic and Stone are also good trade assets.

Jersey wins this trade IMO.
Seeing the Ducks weaken their defensive depth makes me happy.

Every single one of them is attractive at those cap hits.

Hamonic is a -40 defenseman since he last put up a positive month with limited offensive upside. He was worth his contract 3 years ago. Somehow because he asked to be traded his subpar play for the last 2 years was overlooked.
Stone just signed with the Flames as a UFA. By definition the Flames paid more for him than anyone else thought he was worth 24 games ago. His play since he signed has not made his value go up.

There are more factors to UFA than that. The fact that Stone signed with the Flames doesn't mean that other teams wouldn't be willing to pay the same salary amount. For example,
- We had an advantage because we picked him up late last year, gave him a chance when his stock was low, and he had a good experience playing.
- He signed on June 30, before free agency started. While he would have had a chance to speak with other teams at that point, he may not have been the number one choice out of the defensemen who were available in free agency. If you think you might take a run at Shattenkirk, you might not throw a bunch of money at Stone right away, even if you might be willing to once Shattenkirk is no longer a possibility.

Thing is that valuations are different depending on the the time of year, team situations and needs change, etc.
But continue to work on your 2-column spread sheet, sorting on cap hit one day, ice time the next.
