It's more about the injection of a young guy with energy ready to play, and a couple of vets that may have more experience to carry them, but are looking slow and disinterested.
As a guy on the bench, when you see a player do hardworking things like block shots, forecheck, hit people, etc... it gives the whole team life. It makes everyone feel like they can be doing more, and they do. Brouwer was supposed to be doing this but he's been a bum. Lazar is decent at it but centeres tend to be the third guys in on forechecks and more likely in a battle in front than blocking a shot. Having speed and anger on the wings of a 8-10 min line is a necessity.

He has an elements t to his game neither of the others do.
Truculence and desperation. Outside of this preseason, he's always struck me as the kind of player who recognizes that he needs to do whatever to get noticed to stay at the nhl level. Throw a big hit, fight guys bigger than him, block shots, whatever. That kind of energy would be a great thing to inject to the bottom line.

In the flames defence, he had a pretty unnoticeable preseason. He was an easy cut given the other 1 way contracts on the roster.

We desperately need his speed and hustle on the 4th line, hopefully he gets into the lineup.

This. Let's not forget that against NHL competition, only Jankowski looked like he belonged.

Taking a while to get to 5000

How is he on the left side?
Also if he's only here for one game (Versteeg could be back Saturday) I wonder if he gets into the game against Arizona at all? He did have that great fight with Domi didn't he?

I hate Stagan, he has been invisible on this roster.

Looking forward to seeing Hathaway get some games in. He does make the Flames more difficult to play against, and he has in the past injected this team with some passion, much in the same way that Tkachuk does. Besides, considering the possession black hole that is the 4th line most nights, it can't be any worse, can it? He has also found his scoring touch in the AHL, and who knows? Maybe some of it translates into the NHL and he ends up potting a couple of goals in however many games he has.

He has that non-stop-Byron-motor that so many of us covet.

The Flames have two different problems with their bottom six right now.
The obvious one is a lack of scoring, which I agree Hathaway is unlikely to solve.
The other one is a lack of speed and the fact that they get run over on a nightly basis.
Given the way the bottom half of this roster is going, I'd take "energy" and "safe" as a step up even without production. Play the other team to a tie and let the upper half of the club look after it.
Last night was a mess for the fourth line.

Hathaway is up? Good news Flames. Bad news for everyone else.

Hathaway has a way of dragging guys into the game with him. He's a pest to play against like Tkchuck, and if I'm not mistaken had the second best penalty drawn/taken on the team last year behind Matt. I think he's a breath of fresh air that can get these guys playing with emotion. Last night was listless for the most part. I hope Hathaway finds his way onto the 3rd line with Jankowski and Bennett. They would be difficult to handle.

There are some old, slow guys on the bottom six. A couple of them didn't play last night, but in general they are not compensating for their lack of speed with production or at least possession.
The good news for next year is that all but one are on expiring contracts. But that doesn't solve the problem. It just means it doesn't have to be permanent.

I believe in the Jays.
|
Groan...
Person X: "Hey we're not getting any production from our bottom six and we just lost the PP1 specialist we had playing there... what's the play here Brad?"
Treliving: "Call up the guy with 1 NHL goal in 41 contests and poor shot share metrics"
I suppose it could have been worse... they could have called up Gadzic.
