I have a friend who doesn't own a car and rents when he needs to travel. He said it worked well except for the fact that rental companies don't put winter tires on their cars. That was a few years ago, so not sure if it's changed.

Got my Mustang back with the Hakka R2's on her...and she went through the crud on the unplowed streets outside like it wasn't even there. I even did a check at a place nearby where there is a stop sign, then immediately a corner going up a hill. No problem at all. Now I'm ready for winter!

I saw some rentals on Enterprise, and they seem to differentiate on cars with or without winter tires for rentals. Anyway, made the decision to fly after considering cost/time/etc.

Some places will charge extra for winters. But be careful cause they will charge you then give you all seasons. My fiancé’s Dad rents all the time when he stays with us and he pays for the winters in the winter. But sometimes we look and they are just all seasons. Gets his money back when he returns the car though.

Makes sense until someone ends their rental in another location and now they've got units in Arizona with winter tires, or vice versa.

Easier to make it a local option "for same" location rentals. Also an easy sell for tourists, rightfully so.

So I bought a set of winter tires from PMC online, they're being shipped to me installed on the wheels I bought, with TPMS. I have a new 2018 Honda Odyssey, can I sync the TPMS with my van myself or does the dealership have to do it or a mechanic? And should I expect to pay for that if I use my dealership?

I’m pretty sure you can clone your TPS, but you would have to google it. If you get the dealership to do it yes you will have to pay.

From reading forum threads, the new Odyssey will automatically recognize a different set of sensors when you do a tire swap.

I do this twice a year and the dealer never makes me pay. I would be pissed if the 2 minutes it take to resync was charged to me.

I think the charge is when you buy them and the program them the first time, not for swapping after.

My car will only remember one set so every tire change I need to go to the dealer and have them relearn the sensors to my car. It takes about 2 minutes give or take. Some vehicles can remember multiple sensors so it’s not as difficult but overall the process of learning or resyncing TPMS is the same so the dealer would not know the difference between programming them the first time or the 10th time.

My truck I had before was as simple as holding down a button under the dash for 5 seconds, I imagine there is probably a few makes out there that don’t require a trip to the dealership.

I've seen so many poorly equipped, nice vehicles while driving around town the last couple days. $70k vehicles, with $800 tires. Tires are the most important part of traction. Not Quattro/Haldex/4Matic/XDrive/VTD-SYM etc; I've seen so many AWD vehicles, struggle with traction. Especially trucks with their light rears, getting tail whippy. Put a half dozen sidewalk blocks over that rear axle. Save the $10k on buying that Quattro A4/A3, get it in FWD, and spend a fraction of those savings on some studded Hakkapeliittas.

You stop 10% sooner, and take-off 40% quicker, -- standard all-seasons vs standard winters.

I only started using winter tires on my most recent car and while I saw an improvement for sure, I didn't think they were the miracle a lot of people claimed they were. I still disagree with those who say that it makes driving on snow and ice the same as driving in the summer, but today they proved their worth.

My little car has been in the garage off my back alley for 4 days now I didn't need to drive and the icy ruts are so deep that I didn't know how I would get out. But it needed to be done today. I had all my emergency helpers on standby-by (sand, salt, shovel, bleach, floor mats, AMA membership). I was able to angle the car a bit in the garage so I wasn't trying to approach the ruts at a direct 90 degree angle and gave it a shot.

First try, got out without a single tire spin. I know this would not have worked with my old tires.

Winter Tires are good. Not mandatory, but I'll always buy them. I've been on both sides of this coin and I'm never going back to the 'Non-Winter-Tire side.'
