You are clueless to how good he was at defending and putting fear into the opposition going into the corners. He would be on the first pair with Gio if he was in his prime. He would be better at defending than any dman on this current roster. As for being suspended for life those were clean hits.

It turns out that the Flames having a great top-4 d on paper hasn't translated into a great (or even good) top 4 at stopping the other team from scoring. I don't know what is exactly wrong with the mix, but it's not working especially well so far.

I'm hoping last game was a turning point for the group. Without question it has been a struggle up unitl then but last game was excellent. From defending to breaking out they looked good. Hopefully it continues.

The way I see it, Dougie struggled when started, but found his grove. Now with Hamonic in the fold, I think the top-four still need time to gel. Hamilton was well into December before he started to turn it around.

PLus, I think Brodie is a hard guy to get used to as a partner. Warrener said as much.

Warrener also said that as a dman you knew right away if it was going to work.

Mark Scheig @markscheig
Scouts at CGY/#CBJ: Oilers (because reasons), Lightning, Leafs.
Looks like the Oilers are desperate for one of the Blue Jackets d-men.

Andersson is a nice internal option for us on defense, so if we look to trade for a project or young player, I see a D going the other way.
If girgensons, we could cut away at the fringes to make that deal. Personally I like it, if that happens.
|
So Kulak + for Girgensons?
Then Andersson comes up as the 6? Bart the 7?
Maybe Kulak was being show cased, deal fell apart therefore Bart comes in for a bit?

Bye bye Nuge!
Would be awesome if Flames light them up. A sign of things to come when you relocate to EDM Mr. CBJ D man.

Do players really get “showcased” before a trade anymore, if that ever was a thing?

Every team has hours of video and reams of reports on every player in the league (and then some). The NHL is like a small town. Pretty much everyone knows about everyone else.

It was a thing back in the 80s and thereabouts, when half a dozen teams were managed by booger-eating morons. Ice time was not tracked in those days, so it was reasonably easy to fool a B.E.M. by giving a player extra ice so he could pad his counting stats. Didn't happen all that often, but a few teams tended to bite on players who only looked good because the coaches propped them up.
Billy Beane used to to the same thing with baseball players, until the rest of MLB got wise.

Maybe insofar as "this player is finally playing healthy" or "this player's just on a slump, but is still doing the right things".

Yeah, probably not the Flames as their games are meaningful, they have to have the best roster every game.
But BUF and EDM? They can probably afford to as almost everything is for sale given their bad seasons.

Friedman in his latest 31 thoughts says the Flames took a long look at Turris but there was no match with Ottawa.

Interesting but I don't see the fit for the Flames unless they were going to move Backlund to the 3rd line or send him back in return.

He also says that a lot of teams won't make moves until they are sure OEL and/or Tavares won't be available this season.

Yep, it happens, though I imagine not often. The first one that came to mind was Cody Hodgson in Vancouver. He was nearly busting, so Gillis decides to use him in all offensive situations and easy match-ups, trying to make Hodgson seem better than he was.

Kassian at the time was still a well thought of young player, but perhaps Buffalo was already in the know about his off-ice issues, and the two organizations went on to fool one another.

Wishful thinking but Brodie and Bennett for Tavares and send us back our 2nd from the Hamonic trade. Is that overpayment for a UFA? Would Tavares resign with us and could we afford him?
