Flames came out of the rebuild too early and now have two massive holes that in all likelihood will not be filled before Gaudreau's next contract.

And yeah, I hope they don't go spending assets to get another backup before seeing what they have in Rittich and/or Gillies.
I'm with you there, being very annoyed about them acquiring Lack in the first place. Know what? I bet Gulutzan likes him was the exact reason why they traded for him, what other reason there to have? Treliving wouldn't have gone out and trade for Lack without any input.

Development. I think Treliving knew that whoever he got as a backup was going to be riding a lot pine and opening the door to the bench, thats no good for young goalies, they have to play.

I agree with above posters that the Flames need to stop with reclamation projects and focus on bringing up players from the farm. Rittich deserves a look
This is not true. Lack had 18 wins and a 0.921 SP in 35 starts his last season in Vancouver.

Both Rittich and Gillies are on one year deals. Time to sink or swim.

Well, I'm glad we got it right with Smith and missed on Lack instead of the other way around.

I'm hoping this is just a move to get Lack some games in the AHL to see if he can find his groove/rut again.

Bring Rittich up, have him spot start some games, but he'll probably be sitting on the bench a bunch.

No need to make a trade type of move now. Smith will start the majority of the games for the next while, we can evaluate how Rittich/Gillies do on their spot starts and practice time. If they don't show well, then hopefully Lack regained his form, or they make a move.

Agreed. I wish the Flames would have taken longer to exit their rebuild like the way the Oilers, Panthers and Avalanche are doing.

How did a thread about Lack turn into one about Evander Kane?

In what universe does waiving Lack make room for Kane?

I see your point, but why Lack? Couldn't he have found a better choice for back up?

When you consider the GM brought in two new veteran goaltenders, both with question marks we should probably be happy that at least one of them turned out as good or better than expected. At least the way the trade is structured there's very little cap hit sending Lack to the minors if that's the plan. I'm actually glad they are acting on this now rather than close their eyes and hope it gets better. I wouldn't mind seeing Rittich getting a chance as I feel there's not a lot more he can prove in the AHL. His numbers aren't quite as stellar as Matt Murray's were in the AHL but they are in the same ballpark and like Murray he needs to get an opportunity to play in the NHL.

Not too many as cheap with NHL experience.

Yeah. Pretty much that.

Honestly, I was surprised about Lack, I was almost certain that management was going to find a way to either rotate our kids through the backup position or something to that effect. I never thought they'd go out and acquire a backup.

But they did, he was cheap and experienced and once showed promise.

I guess they just didnt have ~30ish games worth of confidence in anyone in the system.

Here's the thing,

You spend big money on a backup and it means no Jagr on the Flames.

Also the Flames are pretty close to the cap which would sink them if we got hit by the injury bug like that one season when Sutter made the team play with 17 players.

I would prefer to give Rittich and/or Gillies an extended good shot than bring in another goalie.

He will take the biggest offer and we know what happens on UFA day. Somebody is always willing to overpay for something they deem critical to their team. He will surely get 8M or close to it.
The only thing lamer than those photos, is all the work it took to take the photos. "Yeah, can I withdrawal $20,000 in cash, all ones." stupid.

Just say No to Kane on the Flames. Guy's career can't end soon enough. I look forward to the article post retirement... Kane's bankrupt.

It's Vegas, of course you want singles. And $20K is what, like 0.01% of his signing bonus? I'm a curmudgeon but I'm not against fun.
