To be clear, the NHL rulebook penalizes spearing even if you don't make contact. It is a double minor for non contact, a major for contact, and a match if it results in injury.
So I guess, also by letter of law, Tkachuk 'speared' him.
Unless your name is Sid

Watch the video.....Travis get jumped briefly by 2 guys ffs... What the league sees ????? WTF???
That tap attempt by Tkachuk isn't even close to being a spear, attempt to spear , premeditated attempt blah blah blah.
How the hell this got blown so far out of proportion is wow.....stupid.
The wings did allot more and got away with everything imo.
Department of player safety you are such a joke.
I hope Ferland, Tkachuk and Brouwer get lined up against these guys next game for a discussion and we see what happens.
All in all I hope this incident gets the boys bonded for the remainder of the year because they needed this to happen.

My guess is that Tkachuk gets two games since he made contact with a player off the ice. On the ice it would have been a 2 minute penalty.
I could see that too if the NHL is intent on throwing the book at him. However, by that standard, shouldn't they then have to do something about Mantha? It may have started on the ice, but it didn't stop once they were off the ice, and he didn't stop once the linesman was trying to break it up.
Yeah, I can see how they look at Tkachuk as the spark causing that explosion, but IMO, Witkowski was already a 5 alarm blaze going nuts.
It was Mantha and Witkowski that I think did things out of line, putting other players in danger and embarrassing the NHL. I guess goading someone into doing something stupid is worse than getting on top of a prone player and feed him punches until you get tired.
(sorry, not arguing with you... just a bit bitter that Mantha didn't receive a thing).

Lol Mantha doesn't get a hearing because he plays for an original 6 team, if it was Tkachuk instead of Mantha he'd get 5 for it without a doubt.Albeit a top 6 team that can't even sell out more than half their stadium.

That would apply to Mantha as well, he made contact with Hamonic's face off the ice. I don't see any significant foul on this play, my guess is its a fine and lecture for MT.
I would be on board with Tkachuk getting a suspension...if Corey Perry would have gotten one in game 2 (?) last playoffs where he started punching players on the Flames' bench and then the Ducks scored. No suspension. No penalty. No misconduct on that play.
What Tkachuk did, it wasn't a spear. But you still can't touch other player on his bench intentionally, which is exactly what Tkachuk did. Witkowski was on the bench, not on the ice when his stick hit him. I wouldn't be surprised with a fine and possibly a 1 game suspension.
Hard to say, but the result will be interesting. I expect at the very least a fine. Still I'm glad that meat head got suspended. He'll feel it in his pocket book more then most players.
It wasn't even a spear, he was trying to trip him if anything. He hit him so lightly that even with his foot having no weight on it and being in the air, it didn't even more lol.
I personally don't think that tap is the spearing penalty, I think it's the second spear he did in the crowd afterward before he lost his stick.
That was the one I noticed but the announcers went on about the tap to his skate and since then the focus seems to be on that. Now I don't think the other spear is much worse but he did make a "second" spearing motion

Anyone who thinks the Wings are getting a 10 gamer and the Flames are getting nothing must be new. Prepare to be outraged. We thought we were getting a pp and ended up with a 5 min pk.
Without Mike Illitch at the helm, the Wings don’t have that league office goodwill anymore. 10 years ago with Illitch there and hands on as he was, that’s 0 games as far as a suspension, with some weak excuse about having the linesman have the player move to the bench to prevent further issues, but not officially on the bench, so him jumping back on the ice was less offensive.... or something like that.
But, because the league struggled so mightily with following their own rule book in this case, expect MT to get a harshly unfair sentence to even things up a bit.
Doesn't seem like the hearing is specifically for a spear.

Calgary’s Matthew Tkachuk will have a hearing tomorrow for unsportsmanlike conduct for actions during last night’s game against Detroit.
