I respect you and your opinion (and all you do for CP) but no. It was embarrassing and disgusting to see the Flames just sit back and get beat and beaten up. In my 35 years of being a Flames fan (I moved to Calgary when I was 4 from Fort McMurray in 1981, took me a year before I started liking hockey) I have never been more disgusted with an effort.
I was at this game and when Wings fans told me they thought they'd get another loss before the game I was feeling so good about the team, then they just gave up, then got their asses handed to them physically too. I want Gazdic up on this team now. This game will send a message to the league that the Flames will not push back. It was thoroughly disgusting and I wish that I had stayed home...
Oh..I'm in Columbus next week. I fully expect that this will spark something and it will still be a 4-2 or 5-1 road trip (that's the optimist in me)
Haha, I love how worked up you are about this.
It was bush league and we all agree on that.
At that point we already stood up to them and after all said and done, everyone on this forum, the players, and the coach probably thought we would be on a PP. yet we got a 5 min penalty.
Sure it would have been awesome to se Ferland go beast mode on someone but it wouldn't be worth it, and the damage had been done already.
So you would prefer for some of our best players to go out there and potentially get either injured or do something worthy of a suspension? In a game that was already over?
Mmm... doesn't sound like the smart thing to do to me.
I too wanted more rough stuff from the Flames after that brawl but that was just the pissed off fan with me. It would've been dumb to put our best players in that kind of position. Especially considering how important this road trip is.
Respectfully, I disagree. I am not for the staged fighting we had for years, but I am for the way that hockey was played in the 80's...guys need to be able to stand their ground and settle the BS that happens on the ice, on the ice. Whoever that bearded idiot on the Wings that fought at the end of the night is lucky that Ferland didn't take him up on his offer in the first. Ferly is probably kicking himself for not fighting, even though it was 2-0 Wings at the time.

I think you need to sleep this one off man!
I agree with the last point man. I will.
But, I disagree, someone, whether it be Ferland, Gio, or Bennett dropping his gloves when Ericcson cross checked him, there was no bite back. You're down 8-2, you shoud be embarrassed. Bennett stood there like a chump. Ericcson dropped the mitts! GG had to have said to not do it. Why? There's your opportunity. I get not starting it, but that was the opportunity and you know Bennett is game..he had to have been told not to
This might be the best thing to happen to the Flames. This is the type of game that galvanizes a team. I could see them recovering from this loss and going on a tear.

Well damn! Didn't know this either.. I guess there's also a very snarly Sam to calm down as well too. You may as well have told him he's a bust and to retire from competitive hockey and have it be less insulting haha.
He looked steamed just from having to view the melee up on the jumbotron.

Maybe, if they didn't sit back like a bunch of pussies. How can you "galvanize" a team when you sit there and look like they did?

I don't think it can be any clearer... The Flames were exposed in terms of how much they have been floated by superb goaltending.
This is a very, very ridiculous statement, the Flames have been playing really good hockey for a long while now and there have not been any floating going on at all. Mike Smith bailed them out for a bunch of games in the early portion of the season for sure, but lately the goaltending has not been that great, and it also has not been necessary for Smith to win games on his own as the team has stepped up their game. This team need decent goaltending to compete, which is true for every team aspriring to be contenders or even make the playoffs, but from the looks of it so far this is not a team that needs to ride Vezina level goaltending, even if it would obviously help the cause.

I'm not sure how to respond, Ericsson went looking for him, cross checked him and then dropped the mitts, linesman came over and Bennett just stood there....do you like that response in an 8-2 game where Hamonic just got pinned in the bench and beat up by a kid?

This is what I'm hoping for too, they should be hungry for redemption and ready to go in Philly.
There is a code of honor in this game still, and Hamonic is a well respected player in the league. I don't doubt for a second some of Travis's old friends, such as Clutterbuck, are watching that brawl of Mantha punching Travis after he fell, thinking "Who the hell does this kid think he is?"

For all those criticizing Gulutzan for not having his team ready to play this game, remember that he wasn't even with the team as he stayed back in Calgary for "personal reasons".
Maybe the fact that they weren't ready to play demonstrates how much of a factor the coach normally is in getting them ready!
At any rate, I think the Wings were a little POed at how the Flames ran up the score on them last week in Calgary. This kind of result (including the "brawl") wasn't really that surprising.

I agree Mantha will be tuned by the end of month.Hamonic is no slouch one of his boys willl take care of Mantha.
Aren't there game misconducts or one game suspensions now for fighting in the last five minutes of a game? If Ferland or Gio did that just think how mad we'd be at GG right now for letting them get on the ice.
A team of professionals. Weak to blame Gulutzan. These guys shouldn’t need a coach to make sure they are ready. Get ready.
Yep!
I remember when Gregg Popovich, yeah THE Gregg Popovich, got accused of something similar and responded brilliantly. One of the most important attributes of a coach is the ability to motivate in-game, but showing up ready is the job of the players.

Time to sleep it off bud.
You're completely over-dramatzing.
It was a bad game, and it happens. The incident you're seething over was at the end of the game, and what followed was some of the worst officiating of the season so far (and that's saying something).
We were on the PK, and their first power play unit was out.
So you're calling for Gio or Ferland to go out and pummel one of their offensive players?
And it wasn't long before it was 5 on 3. How dumb would it have been to have someone trying to defend at that point lose their **** and start another line brawl when we're down several players on the ice?
It was a bad game but this laughed out of the building and "#####" talk is brutal. Sleep it off.

What a gutless job by the officials. They should really be ashamed with themselves after that.
Looking over the penalty summary a couple hours after the game, it was apparent the officials didn't even penalize Witkoswki for coming back onto the ice. He already had 5+game for the fight and antics with Kulak, but that was it. They have retroactively added an additional two game misconducts to his name, which will all but guarantee he gets the 10-game suspension. How, at the time, he gets off with nothing while the Flames end up on a five-minute penalty kill is inexcusable. For that alone both referees should be reprimanded.
Watching Mantha pound away on Hamonic was disgusting. That's bushleague. Even watching the replays, he has a linesman draped all over his back and he's still starting the lawn mower until eventually his own teammate, Scott Wilson, grabs his arm and stops him. Credit to Wilson there, as the linesman was doing everything he could to put a stop to it but couldn't catch Mantha's arm. Looks like Mantha got hit with an extra game misconduct (two in total) at the time, so the linesman likely called that. Hopefully he gets some discipline as well.
Credit also due to Versteeg and Abdelkader for grabbing Ferland and Athanasiou respectively after their initial shots over the boards. 79 and 72 might lose a few dollars tomorrow for their actions.
Back to the idiots in stripes, Backlund gives one of them a little drive-by chirp - not even screaming in his face or chasing after him - and gets two and game. What a joke. You completely botched the chance the quickly deescalate a blowout and when a player calls you out on it you escalate things even further and toss him? That's so weak. Let's hope no feelings were hurt. And who knows what even happened to Brouwer but looks like he put a referee out day-to-day with hurt feelings, too.

What's Bennett supposed to do, drop the gloves and get hammered? No point in that. He wouldn't win that fight.
I totally agree that Ericsson was being a tool and I too would have loved to see some more Red Wings get the snot kicked out of them, but at the end of the day it's probably best that cooler heads prevailed. Sending out guys to pick fights at the end of the game is classless IMO.
Side note, love Gully calling out the officials. If I owned the Flames I'd let Gully blast the refs to the media and pay the fine myself. It's a league-wide issue. I'd love to see a coach or two just torch them.
