Old music that rocks
What kind of classic music do you guys love? Any good recommendations?
I am having a bit of a renaissance and listening to lots of awesome old music again. I am specifically thinking of guitar-oriented music from roughly between the years 1965-1980. Obviously The Beatles, the Stones, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Queen etc etc etc are great but I am thinking a little less mainstream, although not necessarily obscure.
Music I love from this time includes anything by:
Yes
Bruce Cockburn
Donovan
Crosby, Stills & Nash
Neil Young
I know I can buy an album by any of those artists from this period and it is likely to be great. It was a heyday for acoustic rock viruosity!

The Allman Brothers ,I always say that.
Van Morrison, I always say that.
Grateful Dead, American Beauty....again/always
Free - Fire and Water Brilliant bass playing, great songs
Small Faces - First Step A super album, Rod's best.
Loggins and Messina -Sittin In Fun acoustic harmony.
JJ Cale -Naturally You won't take it off your turntable.
One of the best albums ever.
Deep Purple In Rock - the birthplace of heavy metal.
Inspiration to Led Zep's Tolkiens numbers. Kidding.
The Deep guys had already played with a symphony.
Tell us what you really need.

I just recently re-discovered the fun and raw energy of the Pat Travers Band.
Also I just compiled some of the old Southern rock stuff... .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Montrose, ZZ Top, Skynard etc...
There really was a TON of great stuff through the late 60's and through the 70's....into the early 80's, including a bunch from Canadian artists.
Other good guitar driven bands (just off the top of my head)
The Kinks, Blue Oyster Cult, Ted Nugent, BTO, Cheap Trick, Golden Earring, Alice Cooper, and on and on.

"Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" by Klaatu could be the best song ever. And the video of the Carpenters' cover is simply the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2-blWgVk-A

I'm pretty partial to Stevie Wonder and some good ole Funk. Stuff like Curtis Mayfield, other soundtrack tunes I'm into (I seem to be into soundtracks) is the stuff done for things like Enter the Dragon, Dirty Harry and Bullit, done by
Lalo Schifrin. Lots of good mentions above too.

I listened to Uriah Heep not long ago in my garage working on the vehicle.
That and some old Deep Purple, and Budgie.
Good stuff.

I would recommend the following:
Mott the Hoople-Mott
The Byrds-Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Elvis Costello-This Year's Model
Sly and the Family Stone-Greatest Hits
Talking Heads-Remain in Light
Derek & the Dominos-Layla
Steely Dan-Can't Buy a Thrill
Bruce Springsteen-Darkness on the Edge of Town
Roxy Music-Avalon
Graham Parker Squeezing out Sparks
John Lennon-Plastic Ono Band
David Bowie=Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory
Joni Mitchell-Blue
The Band-The Band
Patti Smith-Horses
The Sex Pistols-Never mind the Bollucks
Randy Newman-Sail Away
Btw, I just picked up Neil Young's new CD "Live at the Fillmore 1970" and it is superb.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Steppenwolf yet! Others from that era who haven't been mentioned but are worth checking out: Lovin Spoonful, Shuggie Otis, Yardbirds... for something a bit mellower but still really well done, I highly recommend the semi-obscure Canadian folk icon Willie P. Bennett.

James Taylor
Chicago
(I get choked with some of the bands listed - GnR? C&C Music Factory! - OMG I'm getting old)

Foghat
Bad Company
The Outlaws
The Allman Brothers Band (nothing but gold)
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
All of these fit the bill. Of course I would concur with much of what has already been mentioned.
Give Elton John a spin. "Madman Across the Water" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" aren't completely guitar driven, but many of the songs do fit the bill. You'll find the best tracks are the one's that were never hits.
