Generally, teams lose when trading away the best player.
Hamilton is 24 years old, signed for another 4 years at a decent return. You want to make your team better right now, you trade those prospects who have frankly proved nothing yet.
I dunno, he sure could be. It's about as certain (or more so) as Hamilton becoming a number 1 in my opinion. Giordano drives the defensive side of the pairing in my view. Hamilton does not seem to be progressing into that role.

Hamilton is far closer to being a number one right now. I would argue he already is - Top 10 defenceman in the league
This is all speculation, but yes prospects get traded all the time for established players. Duchene just did! Both Hamonic and Dougie were acquired from picks/prospects.
The idea was to get better now. how does trading your best defenceman and replacing him with a prospect really make you that much better as opposed to trading players not on your roster?
Like i said, im not opposed to the idea of trading a star for star, but i think we are jumping the gun just a little bit.
You still didn't answer the question, about trading prospects for a star. Don't you think that would more likely leave the cupboards bare?
Agreed trading a star for a star may be jumping the gun at this point but trading a star for a star your likely to get an established prime and proven player in return.

I did answer the question. The idea of trading Dougie now would be to get better now. that doesn't actually make us better now. Trading prospects does, with the added caveat that it drains the cupboard.
There is a philosophical debate about whether the Flames should do that, but that wasn't what the main point of contention was so its somewhat irrelevant to the narrow focus of my answer.
Of course you are potentially getting an established star in return, but you are losing one too. Larsson for Hall left both teams devoid of talent in the positions they gave up.
Prospects are traded all the time for established, prime, proven players.
I wouldn't compare Dougie to Burns.Burns has a physical side to his game that Dougie refuses to use.Right now we lack a skilled Rw with Marner he would add speed and more scoring.Him and Johnny would drive teams crazy.
I don't care if Dougie doesn't hit as hard as Burns. That's the least important part of his job. Hamilton is going to be able to dominate for another ten years, barring injury, and you should never trade a defenseman of Brent Burns level impact for a winger.
"why not" is a pretty sketchy reason to justify trading arguably your best dman (who will definitely be your best dman when gio retires) for the next decade or so, especially when you have him for term
the return would have to be absolutely highway robbery for me to ever consider dougie as a trade piece

This thread is getting weird. Needs more Jagr, less top pair D getting traded.
It's a post game thread, Jagr was talked about for about 10 pages. What more do you want? What's wrong with discussion in a game thread moving in a different direction after a long time?

Exact same thing is being talked about in Trade Rumours - we can move it there.

Just giving you guys a hard time -- the mood went from "amazing win" with a 500-like OP to "we should trade our best blue line asset because Andersson looked better than Bart for one game"
Not looking forward to the next three days until our next game

I think we should trade Giordano. He looked so tired yesterday. If that's the guy that's gonna show up after having a baby, then it's time to strip the C, and send him to Edmonton. For McDavid.

Agreed. What kind of captain has a baby mid season. He could have planned it better. Come on Gio, babies take 9 months. This isn't rocket science.
