Gio - Brodie
Stone - Hamonic
Kulak - Anderson
Then trade Hamilton for Mitch Marner. This would be contingent on Anderson getting some more exposure throughout the season and proving to be an NHL defenseman, then making this trade closer to the trade deadline.
Personally I think something like this may be needed to take that next step into contender status. We simply need another star forward threat to make that jump, imo.

Yeah, then one injury on the right side and we're playing Andersson with top 4 minutes and ... I don't even know on the 3rd pairing. Bartkowski?
Depth is a good thing. It's one of our team's strengths.

The automatic answer is Stone, but seeing how well he has performed as a #4, plus his contract and Hamonic's value...Hamonic may be the odd man out. Could likely recoup a first + for him.
Similar questions may arise next year with Fox, Valimaki and Kylington pushing...
|
Personally I'm a bit frustrated that we have both Hamonic and Stone. I get injuries and depth, but I feel like we really set ourselves up to not allow any of our prospects to get a chance.
I'm glad that Andersson looks great, and Kulak looks like he has solidified his spot, but Valimaki, Kylington and Fox are coming up and we need the room.
I think the answer is to get rid of Stone, but we lose our biggest shot on the blueline. It'll be a tough choice. Might depend on what we can get back for it.
I would've loved if we didn't have Hamonic and kept our first, and have a bit smoother transition from the farm club to the NHL.

For sure, but if we hadn't traded for Hamonic I think people still would have looked at our defense as strong, especially when considering prospect depth.
Defensive depth is the most important, I won't give you an argument there. However, in the path to hopefully winning a cup offense eventually matters and lack thereof can keep you from achieving your goal.
Hell, who knows maybe this is the start of a turn around for our third line and Bennett and/or Jankowski eliminates the need to make a big trade to upgrade our forwards.
That would be the hope, I just think we should we willing to explore all options to becoming a contender.

I'm amazed that people are still frustrated we have Stone. Without Stone you're in scary territory the second one of the top 4 goes down. Having Stone able to step up is a huge asset. Which lineup would you rather ice right now?
Gio / Hamilton
Brodie / Stone
Kulak / Anderson
or
Gio / Hamilton
Brodie / Bartkowski (scary)
Kulak / Anderson (scary)
Even when everyone is healthy it's a huge benefit for the rookies to have them paired with Stone rather than Bartkowski or another rookie. That way you have a solid defensemen that can set them up for success rather than repeated fire drills.

NHL defence are always in demand, especially ones who can log big minutes. We have 5 of those guys right now. Once the prospects prove they are ready and have overtaken the vets the vets will be moved.
Nothing wrong with having too much of a good thing. When their (Valimaki, Andersson, Kylington, Fox) time comes Flames will make room for them, you don't need to worry about that.

I agree. I call it the Nashville model. They have consistently stock piled D man and traded them for whatever holes they have, works well. D man are always highly sought after. Look at the haul NYI got for harmonic from us

This time last year trading Hamilton was unthinkable (at least for anyone who is sane), but since then we've added Hamonic and Stone as top 4 RHD, and we've also had Andersson continue to develop nicely.
I still don't think trading Hamilton this season is an option, but I could see it being looked at next off season, especially if Fox decides to go pro after his college season is over.
All that being said, I find much more likely Stone would be the RHD to get moved if the Flames decide to move one.

If Andersson forces us to move a RHD, it would be ether Hamilton or Stone like you said. I see Hamonic staying here for a long time and taking a discount to do so.

Well I would be disappointed if they moved Stone because I'm a huge fan, but if he keeps playing like this his return would be quite substantial. Only if they feel they HAVE to move a RHD.

If Andersen forces himself on the roster next summer the Flames would be smart to put all 4 of Andersson, Hamonic, Stone and Hamilton on the market and see what they can get?
Hamilton for the Brady Tkachuk pick +?
Have to consider that.

Doubt it would happen.
You have a very good Defenceman in Hamilton on a pretty good long term contract. Lots of value in that, but you would also be trading for a high lottery pick, which is probably going to go to a team thats not contending anytime soon.
In a similar vein, but not as much, it would be a lottery team trading their futures for Tavares. Not a way to build a winner.

I like the idea of trying to lever a D-man in a trade to add Marner for the right side next year (when Jagr is gone)
Mangiapane-Jankowski-Marner?

Not a chance. We just went as all in as you can go. There's no way you go all in, declaring you believe your window to be open and then trade a top two D-man for a draft pick.
Hamilton for someone like Marner makes sense, as he jumps in and makes our forwards look extremely threatening right out of the gate.

I love that as early as this offseason the flames could dangle a high end dman to get a strong asset. Depending on how Kulak, Andersson, kylington progress I would be excited at the prospect of a dman for Marner type deal.
