If they had the baby yesterday she may not even be out of the hospital yet.

Obviously Gio should get 3 months paternity leave. Gotta work that into the next CBA

Can we not get a couple of days paternity leave for athletes? I know sports is super important and all, but perhaps we can afford Gio an extra day off?
I took all of 1 week paternity leave for the birth of my daughter recently, but I should be able to take off a lot more than that to help out my poor wife who is still recovering at that stage.
I wish that as a society we created a better opportunity for fathers to be present.

This is probably my greatest concern about the Flames this season.

I'm not sure how it works with Civilians, but I know that service members are allowed to split the parental leave/paternity leave in any way between the two parents for up to 9 months.
So dad can stay home for 9 months and mom can work or a 3mo/6mo split, whatever split you want. Is this not available to civilians VIA EI? If they choose?

^ Civilians have that option as well, yes. Up to 37 weeks so approx 9 months same as you described.

I guess the trade off is that NHL players are guaranteed 50% of league revenues, whereas most other businesses are paying a much smaller percentage to their employees

Gio is probably torn as well between playing or staying with wife and newborn. As a father and husband his heart wants to spend time with the family but as capitain , he cannot let CP dump on Bart.
Conclusion:BART needs to sit for the well being of this team. Flames score all the goals

He only has to take off for 4-5 hours to play a game. Give the wifey some rest time.

Agreed! It’s not like he’s the one who had the baby. He should be excited to play if anything! (I also have 3 kids)

The kid is set for life financially...the old man can play a game for a few hours and then head home.
I have beer league team mates that would probably play the next day lol

I am not a father but I am more than surprised at a few of the responses here. The players are granted I believe up to 3 days in the CBA to be away from the team in order to be at the birth of their child. I don't see anything wrong with a player taking some time to be there, games missed and all.
Just because a player makes millions or can retire in their 30's doesn't mean their emotions are any less important. The guy has a son and now has a daughter, girls have a special place in a fathers heart and if he has to miss a game (game being key word) than so be it.
I don't know if he will play or if his head will be in the right space but I don't think there is anything wrong with this at all. It's no different than somebody taking a benefit at work that they are also able to.

I'm sure Gio would rather be home, getting up every three hours to do a feeding with a few diaper changes along the way
Every baby is different just like every parent is different, but I hope Gio plays because (1) the Flames need him on the blue line, (2) the Flames need Bart in the press box, and (3) it means baby and mom are probably doing okay. If he doesn't play I wouldn't hold it against him though.
