heading down to Portland in early May with my son to catch an NBA game, as he is a big basketball fan, anybody have any suggestions as to where to stay? i have no idea what the area is like down by the stadium? some downtowns are nice and some are pretty sketchy. Also any suggestions for other things to do in that area. my son will be 10 when we head down.

Nowhere near the arena unfortunately, but the Kimpton RiverPlace is one of the best stays we've had anywhere. Really nice location along the river. Walkable to downtown etc. We wandered downtown at night no problem, lots of cool restaurants and shops to check out.

Transit is also quite great, so getting around should be no problem.

Portland has a huge number of microbreweries. They have brew pubs everywhere and kids are allowed in many of them.

Portland has the best microbreweries in North America. Also the most strippers per capita. Sorry this was absolutely no help for someone visiting with a 10 year old.

If your son likes to read, give him the Wildwood trilogy (set in both real and fictional elements of Portland), then go explore some of the locations from it like Forest Park (where most of the book happens) and the Shanghai Tunnels.

Irvington is a nice area, it has lots of restaurants and cafes. We stayed at a nice Victorian b and b there called the Lion and Rose, which is recommend.

Also, I'd say downtown Portland is pretty sketchy... Just IMO

went there with the family a number of years ago, we did not like it very much - but that being said, it would ahve been a very different trip had the wife and i just gone by ourselves.

for whatever reason i really hated driving around there as i could not get a feel for the layout of the city.

that area of downtonw with teh food trucks was kind of cool. and we went to some giant book store there.

I would argue that Grand Rapids can give them a run for their money in microbreweries.

Not a hotel recommendation, but check out Hot Lips Pizza.

Hotel Eastlund is literally across the street from the convention center and about a 3-4 block walk to The Moda Center. It opened a couple of years ago after extensive remodeling of the property, and is very nice. It has a rooftop restaurant and a coffee/breakfast shop on site. It's easily accessible from the TriMet train (literally walk onto the train platform from the airport, exit at the convention center), which also means it's a couple of stops on the train if you feel like exploring downtown.

I've stayed there twice for Rose City Comic Con at the convention center, and I would highly recommend it. I wouldn't say the area near the arena is any worse than the area near the Saddledome - probably better, tbh.

Thanks for the advice. without ever being there, I was concerned I would book a hotel in the "hood". I will look into the Eastlund, as walking to the game would be nice and easy

Nope, the area around the arena isn't particularly sketchy. At least parts aren't. The North/south roads around Martin Luther King Jr. road, and such, are pretty interesting, filled with stuff to do, and you have access to the streetcar on that road, so that's pretty decent.

If you are looking for a budget accommodations, I have yet to beat the Eastside Lodge, off of Burnside. Close to the arena, close to Downtown, close to good food and drink (Grendel coffee for mornings, Burnside Brewery for evenings, Sizzle Pie for good cheap pizza, Le Pigeon for good upscale food). The hotel/motel is older, but pretty clean and comfortable. Not so good wifi, though.

Really cheap lodging - Rodeway Inn Convention Center - I've stayed there twice. Great access to transit and good roads, but the place smells a bit like sanitizing cleaner.

Not so cheap, but the most interesting hotel I've ever stayed at - The McMenaminns Kennedy School. Think Hogwarts but built before those movies ever became cool. Honestly, it's worth it for one or two nights alone. It's close to Alberta Street, which is the go-to place in town for brunches, and this is the go-to town for brunches.

What do you and your boy like doing? Outdoorsy types, do you like books and stuff? Are you driving, or taking a flight? (I recommend the drive, btw).

We are flying down, I looked into a few things online and there is a place 30 minutes or so away with a huge waterfall and hikes. the ratings for it were all positive. The perhaps head to an indoor water park just out of town as well. he is pretty active. would like to do the drive down the coastal route, but that will be for another time.

If you're talking about Multnomah Falls, it's currently closed as parts of it were damaged in a recent fire. There's been no word yet on when it will reopen. A lot of the trails close to the city in the gorge (roughly 15-60 miles east of the city) were damaged and/or closed until at least next Spring. Just something to lookout for depending on when you're planning your trip.

That's bad news - Multnomah falls is awesome.

If you don't want to do the coast drive, but don't mind a 2 hour drive or so, spending the day at Cannon Beach is a great idea - it takes about as much time to get there from Portland as it takes to get to Banff from Calgary - and it's probably one of the best beaches on the coast.

If you're going to be renting a car, drive up to Mt. St. Helens and visit the Ape Caves. They're pretty spectacular and they go on for a long way. We went a few years ago and it was a lot of fun.
