Like anybody who is new at their job I am sure Cassie will improve at doing color though I agree she hasn't been the strongest so far.
I like Hrudey a lot, just how self-depreciating he is an a world of egos - but if they had to get a new color guy they should pick an ex-flame with personality like Rhett Warrener. From my end the whole job is to liven up the broadcast and inject a bit of analysis and humor.

How do people become this invested in broadcasters? Most of the time I am not even listening to what they are saying—it is just background noise that creates a pleasing familiarity for me while watching the games.
I honestly could not even form an opinion about whether or not Cassie Campell is a great colour commentator, but I sure as hell am certain that she is not "awful." These opinions are so over-the-top.

Is there anyone who does this well? I honestly can't think of any colour commentators off hand that I would consider "humorous." Those that seem like they might be trying to be (Cory Hirsch comes to mind) are more distracting and obnoxious than anything.

Rick Ball and Kelly Hrudey are the perfect example of injecting a little humor and a "human" aspect to their broadcasts without overdoing it. They make you feel like you're sitting at a table with them at the bar yet remain top class professional in their game presentation.
Their chemistry is just excellent, and this is due to a combination of humility, confidence and skill.

This... it's about being a pro but telling a story once in a while and just being themselves. I find some baseball guys do it well too... it's almost like a dry sense of humor and lighter stuff that doesn't get too subjective or take away from the game.
When you have a guy like Gene Principe or John Garrett trying super hard for me it crosses the line into being hammy.

After watching that streamable of the Johnny pass to Ferland for Ferland’s goal, I think that play is just as wizardry. Certainly a few highlights from that game for AC’s highlights videos
Both of those passes belong on any “top plays of the month” list. Just fantastic.

Yeah Johnny’s move on Ferland’s goal blew me away. How many NHL players end up successfully making that play right there?

Even boring goal leech Monahan had a couple between the legs and behind the back passes last night.

There’s a thread where people mostly just complain about the anthem singer. When I said some people get too caught up in minutiae this isn’t exactly what I mean, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if a thread popped up about the best usher at the dome.

His name escapes me at the moment, but the usher with long white hair that works section 105 is easily the best.

And that's why they put up 4 in regulation. Players skated to dangerous places and another player (well, Gaudreau) got the puck to them there.
The low danger, predictable, perimeter chances were precisely why they were scoring 1-2 a game for a stretch there.

I was at the game, and was quite surprised that Gaudreau wasn’t a star. He was the best player on the ice, and it wasn’t close.

It's not what she says that is awful it's her voice and delivery. It's not because she's a woman either, she just doesn't have good voice for TV commentary. Compare Campbell with Doris Burke, who commentates NBA games, and you will see the difference. Campbell is an amatuer and commentating a game well takes some level of expertise. I'm not judging her hockey knowledge, as it's far greater than mine, just don't like her voice or delivery.

Campbell-Pascal is fine. You gain expertise by doing, which is what Rogers is giving her the oppurtunity to do.
I was at the game, so I didn’t get all of the commentary, but watching various highlights, her commentary is insightful. Does it need a bit more polishing? Sure, and I hope Rogers continues to give her that oppurtunity.

The 3 shootout goal scorers from last night are the only 3 players leaguewide that have 2 shootout goals on the season.

As a goalie, Monahan just isn’t the guy you want in front of you with the puck in the slot. Must be one of the more dangerous dudes league-wide in that spot.

Campbell-Pascal’s voice and delivery are not “awful.” This isn’t colour by Gilbert Godfrey, for God’s sake.
Again, for what it is, the quality of colour in a hockey broadcast is pretty difficult to mess up, and certainly not worth this much attention or frustration.

Lol pretty sure I've heard you whine about the Oilers broadcasters a tonne.
Guess only if it doesn't bother you then it's fine.
