Explain it to me and how it could be used to ban all guns in the United States. Seriously I don't know.

Im no lawyer but this would suggest to me that the government cannot in fact just make it illegal to own anything more powerful than a pellet gun and still be within its constitutional rights.
Quote:
In Caetano v. Massachusetts (2016), the Supreme Court reiterated its earlier rulings that "the Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms, even those that were not in existence at the time of the founding" and that its protection is not limited to "only those weapons useful in warfare".
|
Am I misunderstanding what that ruling means?

an amendment is a change to the Constitution.
people seem to think that the Constitution is some immutable document.
Its not.
the constitution has been changed, or "amended", 27 times in its history
Changes can be made, that's why the founding fathers called it a "Living Document"...
Just because half the government is filled with NRA lackies, sycophants and cowards doesn't mean that the Constitution couldn't be amended to reflect the change from muskets to AR-15s.

At least change the “collector” loophole. That’s pathetic.

This is way beyond a gun problem. Why the F do people decide to go out in a blaze of glory so often? It permeates the whole society with the prevalence of violence in movies, video games, the fetishization of weapons and the military, increasing incivility, I could go on. Unfortunately we in Canada share most of the same media and culture so I worry we will head down the same path, albeit more slowly. The one big difference is our attitude towards guns, which generally negative both personally and political. I would fight anyone who wants to make our gun laws more liberal as it's a slippery slope to greater acceptance and normality.

That's the thing, it's not anything other than a gun problem, because the only place this happens with any regularity is in places with easy access to guns: The US and the Third World.
This has nothing to do with man's state in nature it's entirely about easy reliable access to the means to create mass carnage.
That is what has made this situation more than frustrating to once again hear about. It's about the freakin' guns.

A private citizen engaged (ie, shot at) the shooter. That engagement caused the shooter to flee.

I've heard people say that but I haven't seen it confirmed anywhere, have you seen a source for that?

The republicans yanked all funding for gun studies by the CDC, by orders of the NRA.

Notwithstanding the constitution issues and the fact that a lot of LE would not enforce a law like this, how would you go about collecting them and finding the hundreds of billions of dollars needed to buy them back?
|
Whilst I am well aware that the US doesn't want this and so it isn't going to happen it is by no means difficult or expensive if the political will and public desire exists, the government has no obligation to buy anything back, they just make possession and offence and start collecting and arresting those that don't give up their guns, if there is political and public will then there are no constitutional issues, an amendment can be cancelled, the 2nd amendment can be taken out of the constitution with the stroke of a pen,

Sounds like most of the damage had been done, but a local did shoot at the gunman apparently.
Quote:
As the shooter was fleeing from the scene, a local resident grabbed his weapon and "engaged that suspect," Martin said, causing the suspect to drop the rifle.
"Our local citizen pursued the suspect at that time," he said.
Law enforcement officials followed the shooter, who fled in his vehicle. He ran himself off the roadway, and officials found him dead in his vehicle.
It is not immediately clear if the shooter died from a self-inflicted wound or if he was shot by the local resident, Martin said.

And support of 75% of the states who would have to have a vote to ratify.
It is much much more than just a stroke of a pen.

lol yup...
more guns clearly will solve the problem in the western democracy that already has the most militarized citizenry in the world.... which also has the most mass shootings in the world...
wow...like, it's almost a causal relationship...

Canada will never turn into the United States, because Canada isn't governed like a third world country.

I'm not suggesting it would either happen or be easy but any view of US history shows clearly that every few decades they go nuts about something or other, I doubt anyone in a bar in 1900 would have believed the country would ban booze in a decade or so
