You think 7.5 years is worth $20K?

Maybe it's the liberal is me, but that seems awfully harsh. I get it, don't smuggle drugs into countries. But obviously her potential gain was far less than whichever higher-up criminals would have been. Obviously local and not Australian, but some of the more recent violent crimes around here seem WAY worse to me than recreational drugs, but are hardly punished as severely.

$20,000,000 worth of cocaine, that's likely going to get distributed after being cut with #### like fentanyl? Let her rot.

We're not talking about a gram of weed here. That's enough coke to ruin untold number of lives.

Agreed. Just legalize it already, she didn't hurt no one.

Where the hell does one even put 90 kilos of cocaine to personally carry into a country?

That sounds moronic.

You'd think luggage weight limits alone would have solved this case.

Some of the crew members on the ship were probably paid off to let that slide. I've read that the crew members are being bribed constantly for various smuggling activities...

Well except for the people who are completely addicted to the drugs for whatever reason and have seen their lives destroyed.

Or the people that die or get extremely sick when its mixed with dangerous chemicals.

As much as we romanticize that there's no harm in these drugs and they're not hurting anyone, those drugs put people, and families of addicts through outright hell.

the people that smuggle it and sell it and make it are the worst type of social parasites possible trading misery for profit and 7.5 years in prison is her getting off easy.

If it was a hard labor sentence where there was a benefit from back breaking labor building roads or houses then at least they'd be worthwhile.

Double negative aside, no thanks to the legalization of hard drugs.

The aspects of the drug trade that make what drug dealers and producers do worse than what Philip Morris and Anheuser Busch do are completely tied to prohibition.

At least liquor companies have a) some form of quality control. Can't legally sell it to kids and don't and aren't pretty much designed to be immediately and highly addictive, and frankly when not used heavily are not near as addictive and damaging. But drugs like the hard drugs that pretty much force people to take them daily or more and eventually force you to take them just to feel somewhat functional are far more dangerous.

Drug dealers that sell killer drugs like the current batches of drugs that are killing people outright are the worst scumbags on the planet and should be tossed off of cliffs.

Legalizing drugs like coke and crack and the other hard drugs that do massive mental and physical harm is outright stupid.

Do you think if liquor companies had no regulation they wouldn't sell to kids?

Legalization provides a framework for market restriction. The "pushers selling drugs to our kids on playgrounds" mentality is pretty archaic.

The question isnt do these drugs do harm its would it be worse than now?

Does anyone not use crack because it's illegal? Does this person exist? With weed you expect use to go up with legalization because normal people can use it recreationally. But would crack use increase with legalization?

Part of the current fentynal crisis has been the restriction of Oxycotin. Making it harder to get led to substitutions.

Did we forget about the quality of moonshine during prohibition? Legalization is the only reason we aren't all sipping cateens of gasoline

Way more kids get messed up from liquor than from coke. How many 16 year olds can afford cocaine?

So she plead guilty, the two people she was with did not. It'll be interesting to see if she testifies against the other two and what they end up getting.

I do agree as I've first hand witnessed people do the "I only buy clean coke" routine to other people to find participants but governments restricting access to an otherwise clean party drug is also a large part of the problem. Maybe coke is a bit far fetched but deaths due to laced MDMA are 100% avoidable by legalization. Personally I think it's worth an experiment at this point to legalize more than just weed and monitor the outcome. There's no saying you can't re-criminalize if we end up worse off.
