If you are trying to compare moralities between Russia and the United States you are in for a long discussion. It's better to not compare and criticize both independently, and criticizing Putin has nothing to do with Canadas alliance with the United States.

I said even if he didn't support him and was vocal about it, it wouldn't be a smart idea.
Any public Russian figure who openly disagrees with Putin is at some level of risk of backlash back at home.
Others have been harassed, jailed, or killed in Russia for less than that.

At least he's upfront about the sleazy #### he does. As a whole I don't view the Russian government as much worse than America.

This is a good post, people need to get real or maybe check into one of the fully funded libraries.
I'll add that these guys are just hockey players, I am absolutely not interested in their political views, gossip, PR, or other non-hockey related stuff. Now if they go back to school and become an MP and/or build themselves up in another field like Ken Dryden, they earn a platform.

Ya that's not me saying I think Russia is good. I just don't think they're much worse.
Low bar for sure. If we didn't benefit so much from America's foreign policy I'm sure people would have a much darker view of them

The issue is not which country is worse. I would venture to say that the US has done more worldwide harm than Russia. But a rich athlete living in the US for 12 years using his fame to prop up someone like Putin has little to do with love of country. I wouldn't care for vocally pro-Trump athletes either.

He runs his mouth that way. Despite the best opposition research that the Clinton campaign could do, they never came up with anything substantial in the way of actions to pin on him.
It's funny how whenever Trump says something crass about women or minorities, it must be the absolute truth about his position and his history, but if he says anything about any other subject at all, he's obviously lying. If you're going to discount 99% of what the man says, why on earth aren't you discounting it all? You can't have it both ways.
(I say this as someone who has very little use for Mr. Trump. About the best thing I can say for him is that I don't know of any specific reason why he should be in prison right now.)
