Remember that the 1-11-1 Coyotes are paying Mike Smith $1.4 million the next two seasons to not be their goaltender.

I agree but don't see that trade happening

There are things I’m not liking in this team right now - there is no doubt about it, and I do echo some of those opinions, but this team is still digging out wins and finally has stability in its weakest areas from recent years past.

All in all I think we need to take a bit more of a leveled approach here, not too pessimistic not too optimistic at this point because it’s just too early.

It’s a winning game thread though!! The funny gifs, the ATL report, the funny banter, that’s what make them awesome!
That's true. I do come for the gifs and ATL. Nobody came here for my cold criticism of a win eked out against the SC champs. I get that people are going to jump on that bandwagon with me too easily. I'm glad we aren't pulling a toilet bowl maneuver like the Oil. Things could be far worse. And yeah, like I think the majority of the forum, I think we have more cylinders to fire and the season should only get better. I guess I'm just waiting for that breakout game.

It was an ugly win, but I’ll take it. Points are points at this point and it could’ve been a brutal loss, but Smith was unreal tonight. You can see why the Penguins are the defending champs, they were dangerous all night and straight up dominant a lot of this game. But good effort by the team to reorganize, even the bottom lines created some chances in the 3rd. But, that play by Tkachuk was incredible, kid is a heck of a playmaker.

I was perusing HFB too and as soon as 2 or 3 flames fans started commenting they locked the thread . They come here, spout all sorts of crap, never get banned, just disappear when the team inevitably starts losing, and you get a couple Flames fans giving it back to them (and not even very harshly) and it’s: “I need a safe space, shut the tread down!!!” Is there a more fragile, pathetic fan base?

I think if it were game 63 vs 13 I would agree with your comments. All teams go through some crazy ups and downs before they find some consistency. I think the silver lining is that this team is no where close to that level and we are 2 points out from 2nd in the Pacific.

I hear ya for sure. Lots of this team is under performing and there are questionable things about Gulutzans decisions sometimes.

1. D haven’t produced like they could/should
2. Brouwer/Stajan too much ice time
3. Benny not breaking out, down right struggle at times
4. Bottom six not producing
5. subpar PP
6. Bad discipline (TWE)

When I look at those issues though we also had suspect goaltending and Johnny/Mony disappearing last year and we’ve made those two weaknesses our strongest parts so far to start. A lot of those issues should flesh out as the team begins to gel and gain confidence - I’m hopeful for sure

It's true that the score would've been alot uglier without Smith standing on his head, but the same could be said for the Pens and Tristan Jarry-that kid was amazing too.

Its like if your kid comes home with C+. And the posters are like "woohoo slightly above average! HORAYYYY WIN wIN WiNW IWN WINW IWN WIN WIN" while I'm more like "jeez what a waste of an A+ potential. Not good enuf. try harder."

I might be less enthusiastic, but I'd argue I'm actually more optimistic.

Totally. Lots of corrections to come in the standings. And we all now Flames are notoriously slow out of the gate. Like I said earlier, we need the ugly wins right now as much as the pretty ones.

Pacific is the best division to be in for a team finding their way this year. Thank you LV, Canucks and Oilers. Please use the right hand lane and allow others to pass.

Yes - the flames are making every backup goalie they play look amazing.

This is one reason I wish Bennett would take a page out of Tkachuk's book. Bennett is too serious but would look good if he added a bit of pest to his repertoire. If there is one thing Tkachuk is good at it's playing the game inside the game.

The battlecry is always the same. You endlessly post your opinion - you ARE the theme of this site - but you throw up your hands when faced with a positive opinion that clashes with yours.

You're posting negative in a winning PGT. Just leave it alone. We've heard your opinion... we've entertained your opinion... we get it. I don't think you have a point after this game. I gave you MULTIPLE reasons this was a good game, and you countered none of them. Everyone watching the game can find things that could have gone better, but it's a team game that is full of mistakes and chances. Smile.

We were outplayed in the first, but we outplayed them in the 2nd and 3rd. So yeah, the shots were high. Thankfully, the goalie who stopped those shots also wears the same jersey as the players I cheer for, so I call that a win!

And excuses can fly from any direction. You'd be putting me on blast if I excused a loss on their 4 days off. Teams play back to back, and good ones find a way to win. Did you watch the Oilers game last night? They didn't exactly come to the Saddledome as a pillaged team...

And did you watch the game? Jarry wasn't that bad at all. He faced 34 SOG, and good handful of quality chances. For 2/3 of the game he was the busier of the goalies. Don't bend his talents to fit your narrative, we all watched the game.

Yeah. Depth problems > Top-6 problems / Goaltending problems.

And I does seem the player usage and line up is improved from opening night. Like I said earlier, can't wait for that break out game. Little bit of a drought, but when it rains... it should pour.

giving up 40 shots is the new giving up 30 shots by old standards...considering the first period its honestly shocking the flames closed the gap as much as they did

Seriously. How good does it feel to have a goalie we can count on night in, night out. I'm not a nervous wreck every time a team gets any sustained pressure in our end now!
