Thor: Ragnarok Spoilers

I know some people haven't seen it yet, so I figured we'd start another thread where we could discuss. Just came back from watching it and I thought it was hilarious. Action was great, music was fantastic , villain was kinda meh, but overall I really enjoyed it 😁

The humor in the film is for sure the best part, after the first scene between Thor and Surtur I knew that if I was going to enjoy it I should not expect a serious film. I kinda knew going in this was going to be more comedy than superhero film, but I wasn't expecting the amount and quality of humor that we got. Did anyone else catch all the other past champions apartments? I think I saw Beta Rey Bill, and also people were saying they saw Man-Thing as well.

Loved that Luke Hemsworth also made an appearance as Actor Thor. But Korg really stole the show.

It was well directed with some very clever humour.

that said, without the right director that one could have gone really badly.

Movie was loads of fun. Well plotted, well paced, hilariously funny.

It is remarkable how well Marvel has made their characters so likeable. They've made it easy to believe that the characters are friends and not just a random collection of heroes stuffed into a movie.

Goldblum had an even better role than I'd imagined. Really fun.

That was awesome. Glad they went campy for this one. Infinity Gauntlet is gonna be pretty serious. Same with Black Panther I think.

Kudos to Goldblum, he pulled off a heck of a grand master. And Krog, that kiwi charm wins another day.

Cate Blanchet is great. Hella was a good villain through Blanchet.

Nice to see this is finally out in North America so I can discuss further than just saying I loved it. My only problem with the film was the sometimes jarring transitions from the silly Sakaar to the serious Asgard but overall it was very entertaining with amazing humour with some deep serious moments. It was probably the funniest movie I have seen since Waitiki's last movie, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Here are some of my favourite things:

-Sorry Euro Trip we have a new best Matt Damon cameo. Also Sam freakin Neil and a Hemsworth brother! Awesome!
-I loved how Immigrant song wasn't just in the trailers and played a major part in the film.
-The villians were solid. I absolutely loved Godlbum as the Grand Master, Blanchett acted the Hela out of her role, despite some cheesy lines, and Hiddleston was once again solid as Loki being both a villian and a hero in this one. The best Loki moments were his reactions to the Hulk in a hilarious call back to the Avengers.
-The Hulk was great with more dialog and the maturity level of a toddler. I also like Banner who was clearly in shock at being trapped for two years and ending up on another planet.
-Korg stole the show. Kiwi Maori accents are funny.
-The Revengers hahaha!
-The argument over the strongest Avenger and Thor's password being Point Break.
-Some solid references for Kiwis and Aussies including the space ship being a Commodore.
-The lord of thunder haha.

Overall I really liked the new direction they took Thor in with the short hair, losing the hammer, and all the humour. I also was happy with the new female lead who, as a warrior and drinker, should be a far better love interest than annoying Natalie Portman.

Really enjoyable. I spent most of the movie laughing, which was a nice change.

I've never really noticed Cate Blanchett before, but she was super-hot in that outfit and with the long black hair.

Really good movie, it was very well done. There was never a dull part, they had a bit of GoTG in there with the way they handled the aliens and whatnot so it fit continuity, but it was unique enough to feel like its own separate world. It still had that overall Marvel feel which is great.

I was a bit confused by Thor though, he started out so serious and regal in Thor 1.. and now here he is. Did I miss this transition somewhere? Was it I guess what we saw at the beginning of Avengers 2? I just felt like we got the Thor from his little short skits with his room mate Daryl, which is fine.. but I dunno, felt like they did a 90 degree turn with his attitude and skipped a step. I also was disappointed that the funniest parts were in the trailer.

But overall great movie, Hulk acting like a brat was one of the best parts. But the actress playing Valkyrie stole the show for me, I really liked her in Creed as well, had some great swagger. I'd say this definitely belongs in the second tier of comic book movie rankings.

Also, Krog or whatever, the rock dude, was voiced by the director Taika Waittiti. And Clancy Brown (the head guard from Shawshank) voiced the lava dude.

The ending fight was really epic! Thor just wrecking that undead army with his lightning abilities alone was worth the price of admission.

I admit I was confused at first by this movie. I pretty much had no clue what kind of movie this would be going in, so the humour threw me off at first. But at the movie went along, I got the point and just strapped in for the ride.

The 80s electronic music and color palette was a fantastic choice. Just found myself feeling giddy every time the epic synth music would play.

Fun movie overall. Totally demolished the previous Thor movies in entertainment. I'm thinking I'll enjoy it even more the 2nd go now that I understand the tone of the movie better.

Movie was hilarious.

Not sure if it made a bit too much with the funny - sort of undermined the whole "epic final destruction of Asgard" element of it. Cate Blanchett is always great, but didn't have a whole ton to work with here. I didn't think any of the fight scenes were particularly great, because while they were entertaining, there was no real tension in any of it - the best was probably Hulk / Thor, but you knew nothing was going to happen to either of them and they'd be teamed up afterwards. Similarly, you knew Hela was going to just kick the crap out of everyone and that no one stood a chance. She straight up kills Volstagg and Fandral and the movie is basically like "meh, you shouldn't care about these characters who've been in two consecutive movies as the protagonist's best friends, let's just move on". The climactic battle is basically Thor et al massacring a bunch of faceless unnamed henchmen. And when Surtur comes out at the end, you knew that one was a fait accompli too; Hela wasn't taking him down. The only suspense was when Hulk went after him and for a split second you're wondering, "is Hulk really going to eff this up"? But no, it was just a gag. Also was not at all sold on Tessa Thompson as an alcoholic Valkyrie, and I'm barely familiar with the character's source material. They needed someone more physically imposing. Thompson seemed more like a GOTG character.

So there were some flaws.

But on the whole, it was a really entertaining movie, and frankly, Jeff Goldblum makes up for all of the flaws basically on his own. Unbelievably hilarious. For all the post credit scenes, usually you wait for the whole credits and at best you're like "oh, okay, I see what they did there". This one, he goes "it's a tie" and the whole theatre bursts out laughing. Guy is an absolute gem. Hiddleston is always great, and this was Hemsworth's best Thor performance yet by a mile (I guess not the highest bar, but still).

So while I liked it and it's worth going to see in Imax, I think at the end of the day it was too much packed into one movie to really get near the top of the list of superhero movies. It needed to be two movies to really give the Hela side of things its due and really get to the "epic" level of things, and the stuff on Sakaar could have been a feature length film on its own. But obviously that wasn't going to happen, so we get this, which is really good, but had potential to be amazing.

EDIT: Oh, and we're assuming that Loki took the tesseract, right? I wonder how that sucker finds its way into Thanos's hands.

That was Thanos' ship in the first post credit scene. You can reasonably assume he was coming for the gauntlet and tesseract already. If Loki has it, it's on the Asgard ark and thanks is about to do some stuff.

He already has the real gauntlet. That was one of the good pieces of attention to detail in the movie - Hela addresses the problem with the right-handed gauntlet being in the Asgard treasure room from Thor 1, which assumedly they did before actually planning out the Infinity War saga. She knocks it over and says "fake".

That said, was that actually Thanos's ship? I didn't recognize it, but heard people next to me in the theatre say it was a Kree ship. I guess that would make sense, given that they have no more Cosmic movies prior to Infinity War. I really thought they should have put Nova and / or GOTG 3 and / or Dr. Strange 2 and / or Captain Marvel in there to set the whole thing up better... but I guess Infinity War is only going to be all stuffed into a single movie (which seems insane, particularly given Thanos's limited screen time to date) and there are already about three films' worth of characters involved.
