Greatest of all time.

Going into that episode, I knew nothing of what was to come as i avoided all books and spoilers.

That was literally the first time for a TV series where I was in complete shock and thought the network was trolling the viewers

I remember all the hype around people not giving away the twist in The Crying Game.

A memorable advertising campaign generated intense public curiosity by asking audiences not to reveal the film's "secret" to their friends. Wikipedia

The Red Wedding is a good one but personally I found the season one shock death of Ned Stark to be far more surprising. Never in my wildest dreams did I think they would kill of the lead character.

With the Red Wedding there was already the expectation the show could kill off main protagonists and there was a bit of foreshadowing that things were not quite right at the wedding.

Angel had several shocking deaths but chiefly:
Doyle in season 1
Fred in the final season
“Wesley why can’t i stay”
The entire arc of Wesley’s character is also great. While a compete change its one that happens over time and feels totally believable. Great series. Better than Buffy

The whole Doyle thing was so tragic both in real life and in the show.

Wesley was the best character on the show, and yeah I could have put his betrayal of Angel up, and also Cordy being the Beast Master.

Fred's death was so well done and gut wrenching, and at first you think, its Angel, they'll find a way to bring her back, and then they bunch you in the guy again when Ilyria matter of fact states that her soul was obliterated.

Yeah I didn't see it coming. And it was a character that had a lot of room to grow still - which made it all the more shocking.

It is a shame the series ended because they had some very interesting things planned with Ilyria where she would adopt more of Fred's traits over time in part to gain the affection of the rest of the group.

In the comic, which basically continues where the series leaves off, Fred does eventually return.
