I love these alternate reality type questions. There is no perfect laboratory to test this, but what if he signed with Calgary and earned his stripes slowly on a pretty poor team at the time?
Maybe he gets an 80 game season to iron out the adjustment period to the NHL instead of fits and starts of 15 games and never finding his hold.

I would say that’s highly doubtful given over the past six years he’s had ample opportunity to prove his worth playing in multiple NHL/AHL organizations.
