Smith's puck handling skills were on display last night. You could see the adjustment the Caps tried to make half way through the game as he was stopping every dump in.
IMO, the reason the D looked so good last night was from the forwards support and back checking. The Flames look like a totally different team when they move their feet. /captain obvious

I think right now Frolik is the player that needs to be removed from the 3M line. Offensively he's been dragging the other two players down.

I'd rather see Tkachuk and Bennett swapped. Give Tkachuk his own line. Get Bennett with Backlund and see if he can be helpful.

My thoughts as well. Bennett's effort is there, but could use the kick of playing with players better than him. Moving Tkachuk to the other line could be a good test for him.

great game, great discussions and no major freak outs. I guess for this place to be more bearable the Flames just have to win every game. All is well in CP....for now.

Nah, they just need to look like an NHL calibre team.
Anyway, I like how Ovechkin only, eventually, came drifting back to something approaching Monahan's orbit on the GWG. How the hell do all five caps just completely forget he's there?

The thing is that Tkachuk is too good to be on the 3rd line. On a team thin with talent on the wings you don't want to put your second best winger on the 3rd line. When I look at the 3M line there's one player that sticks out as more of a really good 3rd line player than top six and that's Frolik. Another bonus of having Frolik on the 3rd line is that he's fairly responsible so at the very least if that line isn't scoring it's not going to be a total liability.

Because Johnny is such a wizard that everyone was focused on him. That's why he's far and away our best forward, no other player on our team comes close to giving the defense headaches like he does. I used to think Backlund was close behind him and sometimes even better, but this season Johnny has really stamped himself as the MVP when it comes to our forwards.

Exactly, Gaudreau is usally able to get everyone's attention and Monahan has the ability to find open ice, that's why those two work so well together. When Ferland plays like a beast it helps get the other team scrambling too. When the top line clicks, they're good.

Was at the game so didn’t have a chance to post last night.
Team played well for 60 minutes, probably their most complete game of the season.

I never understood the 'hate' (though hate is a bit strong word) for Gaudreau. Players like him will always have a turnover or two, sometimes at a bad time, but to me he's always been a responsible player in terms of defense. Not Backlund by any means, but not bad either.

Yes I have never missed a game for any reason.
The only ####ing stat that matters to me or should for any one for that matter is the score at the end. That anylitic stuff is great for the team's management but for a fan it means dick all. All I wanna see is a W.

There just pictures man - not to difficult to understand.
I like them as a supplement to the game to help understand what you're seeing. More often than not the game does play out very closely to the advanced stats.
For instance, shots were fairly even after 60 but that shot chart tells a different story. Calgay did a good job of keeping Washington out of the slot. On the flip side Calgary had most of there shots from the slot. This passes the eye test too when watching the game. Even though Calgary only had 7 more shots than Washington the game felt far more lopsided. The first picture shows this.
The next picture shows the momentum. Anyone watching the game would probably agree that while the Flames looked good all game they looked especially dominant for 10 minutes in the 2nd. The simple line graph shows a 10 minute chunk of time in the 2nd where the Flames had 20 shot attempts. That is essentially like 10 minutes of PP control without actually having an extra man.
Anyway, sorry to offend you. Some poster enjoy the stats so I figured I'd share some pictures that show just how great of a game the Flames played.

You do this, you win more games than you lose. I imagine a graph like that can be used by the Flames to say to their guys "this is what happens when we execute".

Does anyone have a GIF or a short clip of Smith decking Ovechkin? That was my highlight from last night for sure. So awesome.

Secondary scorning continues to be an issue, but not for lack of trying, I thought the bottom six had some decent opportunities.
A huge positive is that the Flames only took 2 penalties. Killing penalties all the time has killed this team.
Still, secondary scoring has to happen if this is going to be a playoff team. The Flames won't win many games if they don't score more than two.

I wouldn't be worried too much about scoring if the Flames play the way they did yesterday. Grubauer kept the score from being a blowout.
