Not sure why anyone is still surprised with Ferland. Our most inconsistent forward for a few years now and don't think that's about to change.

He reminds me of Bourque a little just not as good of a goal scorer and more physical. When he's on he looks great but he can disappear for stretches.

I see more Glencross in him, had the tools to become a very good role player and was forced into a top 6 role. Once he got used to that he wasn't the same player.

Ferland is a perfect 3rd line guy. Too good for 4th line and probably not quite a top 6 forward though can excel with limited top line play as we saw last year.

No reason he should not be part of line rushes at practice today unless he is banged up.

Yeah, actually a lot of overreacting around here given the score and the record, whether deserved or undeserved we know this team starts slow. Take solace in the fact that the goaltending is country miles better, and if the whole team starts playing the way they can, think of where that can take us.

If Jagr pots one or two of his chances it could've been a Flames win, even with the not so great play overall and the same people would be talking about going on a deep playoff run instead.

It's actually normal for even good teams to have these sorts of games in October, when things are clunkier than the rest of the season. Even if it is disappointing to see.

Try to level out a bit people. 90 percent of the season to go and we're above water despite another slow start. The Flames' best is yet to be seen.

I hope they aren't benching Ferland for his play last night. The whole team was crap and I think it's because of the long lay off, but for Ferland, that layoff was even longer as he missed a few games due to injury.

What we saw a lot of last night was a lot of rust from everyone and no one player would have more of that then Ferland.

^ I agree and don't advocate benching Ferland next game. Get Glass out of there and give us Jankowski, get Bennett on the wing.

I was at the game last night but didn't see what Tkachuk did in the skirmish at the end of the second period to get a penalty. Can someone tell me what he did? Or, better yet, anyone have a video of it?

I hate that Tkachuk had to sit while frequent offenders like Sam Bennett and Dougie Hamilton have a seemingly unlimited bank account because the way I see it, Bennett isn’t just in a deficit, the kid should be filing for chapter 11 brankruptcy right now.

He shoulder checked a guy at the end of the period only after his stick was held by a Cane’s player. Personally, I think he did it out of sheer frustration that his team was getting the short end of the stick from all game.

I think a lot of the problems of getting our of the zone are on the forwards. They are blowing the zone too soon or rushing the exit or making poor reads. On a number of occasions against Carolina, the defense was winning the puck battle and moving it to a forward, only to have the forward make a dumb play to turn it over again. There was one particular shift where Hamonic won a number of puck battles behind the net and moved the puck to a forward, onlyl to have the forward turn it over blindly. Stone and Bartkowski was also victim to this a few times.

This also isn't something new with this forward group. Their attention to detail in the defensive zone both in terms of defending and moving the puck out is really really poor. They try to be way too cute with little touch passes and behind the back plays. It's been a problem since the Hartley days and it looked like Gulutzan cleaned it up by the second half of last year, but it's back. It's just plain old laziness. The forwards just want to score and are not doing their job in the defensive end.

Agreed re: Brodie.

As to your second point, Gulutzan’s system is some sort of odd chip/rim play to forwards standing around at the red line. I agree there were some boneheaded breakout errors by the fwds last night but I think it’s a ####ty system they have altogether.

Those penalties were soft calls and the Canes were getting away with murder last night. Pretty disheartening to a young guy playing hard when he gets a soft call and the coach benches him. Makes him shy away from playing hard and physical.

I like how 960 mentioned that they went from allowing the fewest penalties per game to amongst the most in the league suddenly just under 2 seasons ago and were trying to rack their brains for an answer as to why.

Wideman happened, Rob.
Wideman.

But they're also reaching in too much.

I do not think Corsi is the best indication of play.. but this is pretty Telling.

https://www.naturalstattrick.com/gam...018&game=20102

Michael Stone had a CF% of 6.25 and Matt Bartowski had a CF% of 10.53.

Essentially a Pylon would have a better CF%.

3rd pairing is awful for sure. Too bad they sent down the best 6/7 candidate through camp in Andersson. Oh well.

Their logic didn’t really make sense. Just look at Hartley’s system that was a corsi black hole and the fact that they were the most disciplined team in the league at the same time is miraculous. This team should theoretically take even less penalties now that they have the puck more often but they don’t. The other variable is obviously the Wideman incident which also coincided with the change in the team’s penalty frequency. Hmmm I wonder why...

Which is why deploying them with the Gaudreau/Monahan/Jagr line all night was idiocy.

Also has nothing to do with systems play or laziness.

There were a few dumb obvious penalties the Flames took for sure, but a lot of it seems to be frustration that the other team doesn't go by the same standard. Some of them could have been called literally 1000 times against the Carolina Waterskiiers.

This Wideman s*** has to end. Flames played like ass and deserved to lose last night, no doubt, but god damn this Wideman thing is getting old. Least penalized team to the most in one magical night. Okay refs we get it, you aren't very professional. We got it, now f*** off.
