You guys saying “thanks Bennett” are hilarious. The first penalty was a back check taking away a scoring chance, the second was taking away a scoring chance because Hamilton lost his man. One of you should start the Woes of Sam Bennett thread so there is a central place to make silly comments.

Apparently you missed him slew footing a Canuck player immediately after getting out of the box?
This is a player who historically takes idiotic penalties... taking idiotic penalties.

10 pp minutes against in the first 20 mins.
This team looks terrible. Our top pairing gets worked, top line hemmed in their few shifts, just depressing.
Really disappointed. Overrated defence for sure.

I disagree. He's standing around not moving his feet way too often or being out of position and taking the lazy stick work that's going to be called today. Just because others may have messed up, he's not putting himself in a favourable position at all that is required from an NHL calibre center.
Also the non-call penalty against penalty was pure undisciplined buffoonery. He might not have been called for it, but that's a penalty 99/100.

It's game management - Try to keep the game as close as possible (hey look it's tied after 1 period) and see if we can get the game to OT so both teams get at least one point.

These penalty filled games are the worst for entertainment value. No flow whatsoever, the 1st line star players are stapled to the bench, and the refs basically dictate the outcome. Just brutal.

Bennett is often guilty of making the lazy play because he thinks he can get away with it. You don't see Gio making lazy plays out there, and that's the difference between a guy who gets it and a young guy with potential who's still learning what to do.
Bennett should not be above criticism.
|
Not saying he is above criticism, however there a lot of people that just like to bitch about a player. Example his 2 penalties tonight being dumb.

Instead of acknowledging that, they just pile on Bennett. It’s a completely inaccurate read of the play, and I guess people just like to pile on players for the hell of it. It’s, as he put it, brutal.

Can't speak for others, but the only penalty I called dead stupid, dumb and idiotic was Freddie's penalty because it was from behind, in the numbers & with a guy without the puck in a vulnerable position. That was dangerous and had the potential to be really bad.
And sure enough, as soon as Freddie's penalty expires, the lucky bastard gets into the 3 on 1 and gets the assist on the Gio goal.

he has not produced at a rate that was expected of him. He still makes low IQ plays and doesn't seem to be able to grasp the center position, it's time we at least see what Janko can do at center because he looked better than Bennett in pre-season, has a much bigger body and a better shot. It's time

His defensive coverage is poor and I'm beginning to half seriously wonder if he is brain dead. I'm going with for now that you are correct and he needs to play on the wing.

Freddie Hamilton should have played his last minutes as a Calgary Flame.
Bury him and recall Hathaway.

The boys better come out ready for the second. They didn't come out ready for the third last night... And we know how well that went.
They're looking like a team needing some leadership. The lack of discipline and our "elite D" not moving their feet is costing us handily. Need a leader to step up and get these boys motivated. We're better than this.

Well I guess Bennett's a bust eh folks? Trade him now while the getting is still reasonably good?
Truth is the entire team is playing like they're drunk or hungover. They're all playing bad. Zeroing in on Bennett like a mob with pitch fork and torches is a bit much. At least he's hustling to cover up mistakes made instead of pouting about them.

I couldn't find a clip
Flanders: Bart, I've barely been here a good solid week, and you've been sent to my office 11 times. And now that I have peanut butter cups, you seem to be getting in trouble every hour.
Bart: [through a full mouth of peanut butter cups] Must have been a coincidence.
Flanders: Uh, anyhoo, Bart, you're going to have to be punished. This isn't some sort of clubhouse. [Bart holds up an empty glass and rattles it] Oh, sorry. Were you drinking Slice or Yoo Hoo?

Meh, I'm fine with Jagr's play... seem a bit harsh on him.
