Ok - here's my high praise. I think he's been the second best forward on the team thus far this year. In Game 2, Johnny and Bennett changed the game. I thought he also played really well against Anahiem. In Game 4, Jagr was an anchor on that line.

So your two best are Johnny and Bennett? Tkachuk says hi.
I think 5th or 6th best was probably accurate. I just don't think Bennett has been outstanding on the team. He's been fine, and I have no complaints. But just not one of the best.

Bennett's got plenty of time to improve and grow, and because he's being cultivated as a centre, he's being brought along slowly.
I agree it kind of stinks to see others in his draft class excel while he moves along more slowly -- Draisatl, Nylander, Ehlers -- but it's hardly time to cut him loose. I don't know what the breakthrough factor will be, but he's got an all-time great on his wing to give him pointers now. That oughta help.

Bennett and Tkachuk were born to play in tge nhl together.
Its also bull to criticize sam for under producing when hes been a 3rd line center playing with the likes of brouwer and chiasson for a while.
Put him in between tkachuk and jagr. Put him on the pp1. Lets get him some easy tap ins like Monahan.

Monahan's easy tap ins aren't quite as easy as they seem. He had an easy tap in last game. Which he created from the get-go. Count how many of those taps ins included touches by him earlier in the play. There's quite a few.

The problem is Bennett getting into position for those tap-ins. Monahan may not be as explosive as Bennett but he certainly thinks the game at a higher level. Bennett tends to panic in close and flub his shot or shoot wide, as opposed to taking the time to place his shot like Monahan does.

I agree. On the OT goal he also totally out-muscled the Kings defenseman. Monahan does a lot of little things really well that lots of people don't always notice.
On topic, I'm pretty surprised at how many people are adamantly against trading Bennett. In my personal opinion it's pretty clear that his ceiling is a 2nd line player, and I don't even think that's a guarantee. He just hasn't shown any progression that would indicate otherwise. If you can get a team to bite on potential then you do it. I'm not saying you have to trade him, I like what he brings, but he's far from untouchable.

Was going to say there are very few "easy tap-ins" in the NHL - more often than not it is intelligent hockey players who know where to get to while the puck is in play.

You see. There's not exactly a big market for 18 year old Sam Bennett's. He is such a niche collectors item that to the right buyer might be worth a lot. But the problem is you still have to go through all that effort to sell him.
Best I can do is $3.50

What kind of offer would it take for you to trade Sam Bennett?
To Islanders:
Sam Bennett + Mark Giordano
To Flames:
John Tavares (signed long-term) + Thomas Hickey
Gaudreau - Monahan - Lazar
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik
Jankowski - Tavares - Jagr
Versteeg - Dubé - Ferland
Brodie Hamonic
Hickey Hamilton

It takes positioning and awareness. He does get a touch on the puck before the goal sometimes. Sam is more dynamic and talented. Sean is smarter and more refined imo. I feel like seans stats in his first 3 seasons were a bit inflated by pp1 time, sheltering. Easy ozone starts. Oh and hudler and johnny being top 30 in the league in pts helps too.
The opposite of this is how weve 'developed' sam. The hivhest pick in our teams history. People always say certain players need top 6 time and pp1. Or they are better off developing elsewhere. I think sam is one of those guys. He is JUST now getting a good linemate Jagr. He is almost never on the first pp unit. He plays on the 3rd line ffs. It annoys me to hear people talk about trading him when
Lets do an experiment. Monahan on the 3rd line and sam on the 1st with johnny. Bet you sam would be the one scoring 30 plus consistently and people would be talking about potentially trading Mony instead. Shows the lunacy of fans
I dont understand how people cant see that the position these 2 players have been put in has effected both of them. While monahan isnt riding the coat tail of johnny. He is the beneficiary of some incredible vision and passing from an all star and lock for us team, which suits his goal poaching style.
If i was sam bennett i would ask for a trade if they dont give him more ice time and better linemates in the next seasons.

We'll need to call in someone who knows a little bit more about Bennetts.

It would be almost impossible to get what Flames fans think is value for Bennett given his current performance stats versus what most people think he can do.

I wouldn't do Galchenyuk for Bennett straight up, Montreal would need to add. But Galchenyuk is signed for another two years after this at $4.9 per - right in our window.
I love Sam, I think he's poised to have a breakout year. Galchenyuk has a 30 goal season, (allegedly) can play all three forward positions, and our most glaring weakness is still the lack of a top line RW option.
Still wouldn't trade Bennett.
|
Right now, Galchenyuk doesn't look good. His value is extremely low - MTL has horrid center depth and he is still struggling. I think Drouin for Bennett would be more likely, but I doubt either side would do it.

If the Flames were going to trade for Tavares imo one of Backlund or Monahan would be part of the deal. Something like Backlund+Bennett could work but the Flames likely have to pay Tavares between $9-11M per season on an 8 year deal. Personally the first time I want the Flames to hand out that kind of contract is when Gaudreau gets extended.

I really like Sam Bennett, but you are badly underselling Monahan.

So you invent a scenario, confirm it as fact in your mind, and then use that as evidence that some fans are lunatics.... The lunacy of some posters.
Goal poaching? Who is he poaching goals from? Why isn't Monahan the All-star for scoring the goals?
