I thought Backlund's line had a pretty weak game in Edmonton and I'm glad to see them back on track. Now get him signed.
Brodie with another strong free wheeling game. Nice to see he's fitting in with his new partner.
I'm beginning to think Bennett won't be much of a scorer but he still can play a big role on the team.

IMO Hamonic has done wonders for Brodie's game this year already.

Just gonna pop in to say that yesterday was my birthday, and as I blew out the candles, I wished with all my wishes that the Flames would win in Anaheim so I didn't have to hear about that stupid streak ever again.
So, you're all welcome.

Bennett has never been afforded the same level of talent to play with, or the opportunities on the power play that our other top young players have.
If we legitimately want him to be a top 6 producer, then we need to give him competent line mates and the appropriate type of ice time to allow for his skills to translate into points.
Gulutzan absolutely buried Bennett's line last night in zone starts. There's like six players in the league that can dig themselves out of that and produce offense.
Give Bennett ten games with Gaudreau, give him favorable zone starts that top 6 players get, and some PP time, and I guarantee he will start putting up points.

There was more to Bennett's lack of offence last night than his zone starts. There were more than a few moments where he made either questionable decisions with the puck, or he missed a pass or play on his own. Don't get me wrong: I think Bennett has all the tools to be a scoring forward, and I thought he was terrific with Gaudreau and Lazar on Saturday night. But he was just simply not as good in the Anaheim game for reasons beyond his zone starts and line mates. It was one game, but I think it was probably his least impressive performance to open the season, and that is on him.
He will be better.

^^^^^^^^^^^this IS exactly something that gets ignored so much.
Bennett hopefully will have Jagr as a linemate soon. He deserves it. He's busted his ass and hasn't been given-anything easy. He and Versteeg deserve better.

At times, yes. But not in last night's game. Like I said: Bennett was just not as good as he was on Saturday.

Just for comparison sake, I looked at Monahan's first season in the league on the NHL stats page. I'm not sure if there is a way to check his linemates or average toi but I have a hard time imagining his linemates that season are any better than what Bennett is playing with now. I just don't think Bennett is able to adjust his game to the NHL. He doesn't use his linemates well and it feels like he's hesitating nearly every play. I hope that he's young enough to learn to use his talents in the NHL, but to say he has constantly been saddled with bad linemates is ignoring the fact that he doesn't seem to be able to drive an offence himself.

Monahan played 1st unit PP with Cammy, Gio, and Hudler, if memory serves.
Monahan also played very, very sheltered minutes in his rookie season - meanwhile Bennett did not in either his rookie season or his 1st season as a centre.
“Doesn’t use his linemates well” well, he has never had good linemates as has always had to be the key cog on his line. Sorry - but Monahan was never asked to do that, and I challenge you to find a player of Bennett’s age playing Bennett’s position with Bennett’s quality of teammates. You can’t.
Jagr is going to be a huge, huge help to Bennett - who until now, has effectively played spare pieces or absolute anchors who dragged him to the bottom of the ocean.

To me, the clear issue is confidence. And I don't know how to rebuild it for Sam as he barely gets ozone touches most games for a plethora of reasons. I don't see how a guy who's had different stretches basically playing franchise player type hockey could look so broken but I don't know how to fix it either without taking a chance on him with real PP time and some extended ES minutes. If Sam's ever going to break out it will probably be when Monahan gets injured for any extended period.. as-is I'm not sure he's got the mental makeup to succeed offensively as what effectively amounts to as a traditional 3C with what I have noticed to be a short leash to try high-skilled plays under Gulutzan. We've all seen the vision, the efficient zone entries, the two-way acumen, the hands, and the shot - but a player without confidence can't execute any of that. a year ago he was trying fancy plays walking the blue line or dangling guys out of their skates but now he's simplified ad nauseum... two extremes with no middle ground.
Hopefully Jagr can be the first step in building Bennett back up to the player we've seen before. This isn't a lack of hockey sense or innate ability holding him back, it's the belief in himself to complete plays without being benched or having the puck end up in his own net. He's not a guy playing on pure instinct right now, he's too worried about screwing up that he second guesses everything he does.

The Curse!!!! IT"S OVER!!!! SHUTOUT!!! WIN! WIN! WIN!
As is, there’s no problem with Sam Bennett. He’s a 3rd line centre at a very young age on a playoff team. Due to circumstances, his development will take a bit longer.
Any expectations fans have for him are irrelevant/perhaps unrealistic. You’re not going produce big numbers offensively as a 3rd line centre playing with the quality of wingers he has, and for fans to blame Sam for not being able to single handedly carry a line is silly. Monahan has never done it, Gaudreau has never done it, Draisaitl has never done it, and so on and so on. If he can continue to develop his defensive game, and he’s well ahead of where Backlund was at the same age, then it’s a good thing.
Fan expectations are silly.

Watching Acs Monahan highlights from 13-14 he was playing with a mishmash of players including colbourne, stempniak, baertschi, Byron and galliardi. While he did get some playing time with Cammy, hurler and Gio on the pp he definitely showed that he belonged there. Bennett has had the opportunity to play with Johnny and Backlund and play on the pp with Gio and Dougie. He has up to this point done very little to prove he deserves better linemates on a consistent basis.
