My roomie has the best relationship with his guy and there's a 9 year age gap. He's 28 and his bf is 19, they've been together just over a year and i think the age difference makes them stronger. They communicate better than any couple (straight or otherwise) that I've seen and are a truly happy couple-not that annoying happ either, a real happiness. At first I was taken aback by him dating a first year college student, but one thing they've taught me is that love is love.

I will put myself on the side of age doesn't matter, as long as it's legal and true.

I say, if you are out of high school, no high school girls for you. After that...well, tough to say. Being 21, anyone over 25 would be fairly weird for me. But I figure by the time I'm 25, that age range opens up to 35.

I like the Age/2+7 method... but I think once both parties are over 25, it doesn't really matter anymore, it then becomes personal preference.

The high school thing is tough, cause an 18 yr old guy, just in university would logically date women the same age, or a year or two younger than them. Most guys don't like dating older women... of course, many do. I know I typically date women either my age, or up to 3 years younger than me. Being 21, anyone under 18 would be considered weird. My girlfriend is 19, and that suits me fine.

I have a couple who are very good friends of mine and they started going out when he was 28 and she was 19. He is now 30 and she is 21. They are a perfect couple and are both very happy.

Age matters very little, as long as it is within reason. (i.e. Someone over 18 probably should not be dating someone under 16)

Love matters almost exclusively, if you're both in love... go for it.

I've never really felt that age is a big deal, maturity is. I'm 29, my girlfriend is 22 and we get along great. It never really crosses my mind that she is that much younger. If you click with someone there is no sense worrying about age diff.

When I was 18 and in university I had the chance to hook up with a girl who was 16 and in Grade 11. At that time, I thought she was too young for me so I just broke off communication with her. I sometimes question that decision. Probably because I am a guy and I can't believe I squandered such a slam dunk opportunity. Actually come to think of it, that happened twice when I was 18.

Asked to reply, but interesting enough.

I would say, don't worry too much about age, either way. Heck, half your age plus seven means, unless you apply the rule to your mate, you shouldn't date anyone older than you.

The original question you asked was, 'what is the SOCIALLY acceptable age for...' Right there you are asking thw WRONG question. While it is important to be aware of social norms, standards, and incorporate them into your thinking, it is wrong to base anything on your life on them, especialy love, or even the prospect of it.

Do what you are comfortable with and obviously rule in how strongly you feel about the female and how much of a future you see. Lots of successful relationships have broken the rule.

The problem lies in immaturity or selfishness. As this goes down in both people, the prospects of love increase. For example old guys going out with young girls for sex and beauty. (on average) Young girls going out with old guys for money and stability. (on average) Common reasons, not good. If both of those involved want more than that, then maybe not a lot to worry about.

Personally I know you're 24, so that means your thinking 19 or younger. If she's worth it, and you see a future, I wouldn't even be worried about 17 (in that and your case). A friend of mine started dating a 17 about 1 month before her 18th and have been going strong for 2 years, and you know we've got 2 or 3 years on you.

Is it usual? No. Is it always accepted. No? But you know the situation best and are a good guy. A situation that's not always socially acceptable.

Worry not, weigh your options, try to take out age. Sometimes it's hard, cause often for as much love and passion there is, there is still that divide that seems big in the beginning. But if you're 24 and she's (worst case) 17 seven years won't make much difference and probably be quite nice when you're 44.

In tricky situations like this just ask: 'Do I feel like my intentions are pure?' If yes, go for it. If your questioning cause she's a hottie, or even just cause you guys are great friends but it probably won't work, then don't do it.

Take a risk within age difference, BE SURE outside of it.

I'm 47, my wife is 30, in March we'll be celebrating our ninth wedding anniversary. We dated 15 months before tying the knot. You do the math.

I guess I meet the 1/2 plus 7 rule now, but sure the heck didn't when we met.

There are no rules. No two people or two couples are alike.

That happened to me too.... Sometime I don't believe it's so much about the age different rather then the different in the stage of life.

From my example.... I was graudating from University, and she was graudating from.... highschool. Even tho the age differents is only 3.5 years, I still think that was too weird because I will be in a totally different stage of life (finding a job, starting a career), while she would still be going through the whole university life (drinking, clubbing, partying... errr.....studying) and finding the career path. So yea....

Steely Dan seems to have many songs about older dudes and young chicks.

Steely Dan - Hey Nineteen

http://lyrics.astraweb.com/display/1..._nineteen.html

Way back when
In Sixty-seven
I was the dandy
Of Gamma Chi
Sweet things from Boston
So young and willing
Moved down to Scarsdale
Where the hell am I
Hey Nineteen
No we can't dance together
No we can't talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down

Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember
The Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old

Hey Nineteen
No we got nothing in common
No we can't talk at all
Please take me along
When you slide on down

The Cuervo Gold
The fine Columbian
Make tonight a wonderful thing

No we can't dance together
No we can't talk at all

We want your eggs...

Anyways, I always thought the idea was to be like the tortoise and get there before the hare...
