Most agree the Flames have looked pretty bad, so being down only 1-0 is a big positive.

Smith is playing great which eases my biggest concern.

Monohan and particularly Gaudreau are playing perimeter hockey. That line has to be better.

I feel like Brodie needs to play his off side again. Hasn't looked the same since the forced lh/rh pairings.

The amount of absolute garbage on our forward ranks tonight and we can't find a place for Jankowski? Versteeg, Stajan, Hathaway, Glass, Brouwer. I just have to shake my head.

I know, right?

Down 1-0 after 2 on the road in the home opener for the Oilers. I'll take it.

These threads used to be fun with some optimism. Now every poster can't wait to take their shots at players they are supposed to be cheering for (myself included at times).

Do you guys even like this team?

At least McLean had the guts to say McDavid should have been called for a penalty.

Connor McDavid

Connor McDavid

Auston Matthews

Connor McDavid

Connor McDavid

Austin Matthews.... he's not even playing in this game but this is our mandate because we're Sportsnet's mindless drones incapable of anything else.

I know it's only 2 periods ...but I feel more comfortable with Smith in the net than anyone else since Kipper.

Yup. Not a bad road game. Well, a bad game. But they're still in it. Get one early and it's a whole new game!

These guys have become brutal. Maclean calls out the penalty and nobody says a thing.

I think they have been told don't get caught and are playing defensive. The other lines need to win their battles if the Monohan line is drawing McDavid.

Frustrating to watch. Any sense of a transition or odd man rush completely gets nullified by the Flames inability to make the simplest of passes or make the correct read and chip the boards.

Stuff you practice every day and they simply can't do it. A putrid D in edmonton and they really have generated very little against it.

“I’m asking a simple question: if you walked in on Connor McDavid plowing your wife would you try to join in or politely let him finish? What kind of post coital sandwich would you prepare him? Next on Sportsnet we’ll discuss if you should offer McDavid your firstborn immediately upon making eye contact or wait until his heavenly glow envelops your being.”

Better latter third of the period.

I have liked Ferland, Bennett, Versteeg, Hathaway a lot tonight.

I am so frigin happy to see Smith tonight, shades of kipper mosdef.

I'd like to see Gulutzan try to get the Monahan line away from the mcdavid line here. Or perhaps double shifting Gaudreau away from that line.

1 goal game heading to the 3rd. Not the prettiest, but it's right there for the taking. Go Flames!

Three of those guys have been just fine. And Brouwer and Versteeg have made no more bad plays than the top line. I've noticed Brouwer in the offensive end way more than Monahan or Gaudreau, who had one decent offensive shift (I don't really blames them given the assignment foisted on them).
