That Jankowski was literally kept up until the last minute tells me that something else is in the works. He’ll be back very soon.

I don't agree with this but I'm not about to tell the GM how to do his job. Hope he's back up soon.

Flames have this super sweet prospect named Mark Jankowski. He's almost never talked about on CP so I'm not surprised you've never heard of him.

You want someone who can hit? Get an effective NHL player who also happens to hit - not one who can hit and do nothing else.
Yeah, it's our 4th line, so the impact is hopefully minimal - but it's still a big failure by the organization, and a slap in the face to Jankowski.
|
Lol. So much drama and hyperbole that isn't required. We'll see if this is just a short term numbers move or if they truly don't think he earned his spot yet. But if it's the former, it's a far cry from a slap in the face or a poor move by the organization. It's actually an astute move to optimize the teams assets.
It amazes me how litteral people take things and how much instant gratification is required. Do people actually want the team to not make optimizing decisions just so that Janko can make the roster on day one, versus day 2 or 3 or 4 or even 10? Do people honestly think that the team won't manage the situation with Janko properly, and that he isn't mature enough to understand and be excited to go when he gets his opportunity. This happens every year. People #### their pants over the "symbolism" of the opening day roster.
Sure glad the players and the management of this team have more patience and foresight than many on here or they'd constantly be miss managing our assets over symbolism and hurt feelings.

I think FBI is saying Janko has 1 NHL game, not 8.

As the 13/14th forward, he's a super-cheap guy you mostly sit in the pressbox for long periods while occasionally throwing him onto the 4th line. I'm not really worried about it, because it's not Janko's (or any impact-upside prospect's) spot he's taking.

Treliving has commented on other roster moves in the past plus it's pretty obvious there is significant fan interest in the player. He's mentioned what he's said to other players too.

The outrage at keeping Freddie Hamilton (13th forward who is always a healthy scratch) or Glass (who will play maybe half the games and with limited minutes when he is in) is a bit much.
Stajan was his real competition, but I would much rather have Jankowski getting ample minutes on the top line in Stockton than getting limited minutes on the bottom line.
The guys on the bottom line are not - IMO - direct competition to Jankowski. He will be back. Injuries are going to happen, lines are going to get juggled. He was (and IS) better than anyone on the 4th line, but is that where he should slot in to start his NHL career?
I just think it makes more sense in having what I consider a top 6 center developing as a top 6 center, playing 20 minutes a night at EV, PP and PK, than have him playing < 12 minutes a night. I still think he ends up as a really good top 6 winger given the Flames' center strength, but it will come in time.
I do, however, think that he is NHL-ready. However, this is about asset management as well. You need depth in this league, and though I don't think Stajan 'has it' any longer, I can't argue with the notion that he brings a lot of value to the team in different areas as well. It isn't like Stajan is a poor 4th liner.
I can understand that people are disappointed - even angry - at Jankowski being sent down, but this is a temporary move I would bet, and it gives Jankowski the opportunity to get some valuable playing time.
Heck, there may indeed be a trade brewing in the next 24-72 hours anyway, and all of this angst can be put to rest.
|
Just referring to this narrative. When will Jankowski ever get more than a 4th line Center role on this team? Is he going to replace Monahan, Backlund, Bennett?
Unless you're referring to Jankowski getting that role starting next year if we decide not to re-sign Backlund....which I don't think will happen...

I hate that Janks had to be sent down but on the positive he will get a bunch of minutes in Stockton and will be the first injury call up. Was it really going to do him any good playing 6 minutes a night on the 4th line? If he continues to dominate the AHL it gives the Flames options going into next year with Backlund needing a new deal. I like Backlund a lot but if Jankowski is showing to be the real deal I think you look long and hard at dealing him in a package for a top RW.

It depends on many factors. What if Backlund has another strong year and wants $6M per on a long term deal? If Bennett becomes what we think and given the contracts coming up soon down the road you can't keep Backlund at a high price tag. Nothing wrong with cooking Janks for another year getting huge minutes in Stockton.

That was so similar I was expecting to find another link going back three years before that with the same topic. CP version of "Inception" or "The Ricks Must Be Crazy"

There is a few ways to address this.
Remember when the Flames were soooo set on RW? Iginla, Bourque, etc, etc. It was the one area of strength organizationally. Suddenly, it seems like the most difficult one to address. Lots can happen suddenly. I hope (and think) that the Flames will re-sign Backlund, but it isn't a guarantee. There are always injuries, unfortunately.
Still, as much as I like Jankowski the center, I do think that given this team's depth at center, he ends up playing wing for at least a while. I am ok with that. It gives flexibility on faceoffs for instance, as well as flexibility on the aforementioned injuries. Just think Joe Pavelski.
I am more concerned with Jankowski getting enough minutes and being in enough meaningful situations to keep taking steps forward. I don't think there is too much value in placing him on the 4th line.
As for people being irate at Freddie Hamilton, why? I hope he gets re-signed for as long as Dougie is here, and provides the Flames with what he has given them thus far. He is a guy that sits out like 20 games in a row, jumps in for a short stretch of games, and he is out again. He played 26 games last year. When pressed into action, the guy plays lights-out every shift. I don't see a reason to complain about here, especially when one is complaining about Jankowski being sent down. Hamilton is NOT competing with Jankowski. The 13th forward position should be someone with a really great attitude, someone who can play a more physical and fast-paced game, and someone who you really don't care about when it comes to development. Freddie Hamilton is the last player on this roster people should be upset with.

Ice time on the 4th line is a none factor in my view (i.e. behind this decision)
Jankowski in my view, will not be a 1st or 2nd line center.
He is likely replacing Matt Stajan at some point...
So far very few forwards have made the step within the Flames development system (from AHL to NHL).

Personally I doubt he plays wing, its more likely he spends lots of time down at the AHL level.
He is only recalled if Bennett is switched to the wing or if Matt Stajan is hurt.
