I don't think it's definitive enough to just eject a guy like Stajan. Jankowski may have more offensive skills than Stajan, and even that I doubt, but I disagree he is a far superior hockey player. He has done nothing to prove that yet.

If you doubt that Jankowski has less offensive skills than Stajan you have not watched Stajan or Jankowski play. Staj is a great guy, but the team is far better with Jankowski in the line-up. You can't pick your team based on loyalty and being a great guy. At some point you need to play the best players available.

Yes, Jankowski may be 23 years old, but he is very far from a fully-developed player. Is he NHL-ready? Yes. However, the last thing I want for Jankowski is to stifle his offensive development. I think he can be so much more than just a reliable defensive player/possession monster. I think he can be a very great 2-way player, and that means he needs to get quality minutes and continue to develop his offensive game more by playing with quality offensive players.

Foo/Poirier on the RW, and Mangiapane on the LW helps him achieve that IMO.

At any rate, injuries are bound to happen, and I doubt that the Flames will be as lucky as they were last year in regards to injuries. I would expect to see Jankowski back sometime in October in a top 9 role. He shouldn't ever be a 4th liner, IMO.

Put yourself in Jankowski's shoes. Management was saying it's time for him to push for the NHL. He did everything to make the team and the team pretty much said as much.

Deference to veterans (and their contracts) is not indicative of doing what's best for winning. But it was also very predictable given Gulutzan's comments earlier:

A quick glance at a mock opening day lineup — and pre-season prognostications of a depth-chart push from a young centre such as Mark Jankowski — might indicate Stajan will be playing sparingly during the ’17-18 season, as the Flames try to improve from last year’s first-round ousting by the Anaheim Ducks.
But others disagree, including Flames head coach Glen Gulutzan, who has no immediate plans to drastically cut Stajan’s ice-time and has said the veteran will start the year centering the Calgary club’s fourth line.
“Matty will have the same role as last year,” Gulutzan said. “When you’re putting together a team, it’s not just saying, ‘OK. Let’s just put in all of the best players.’ You have to put in the best players at the positions. The best defensive centres, the best checking forwards …

Exactly. Plus I believe sending jankowski down after the camp he has had is setting him up to struggle in AHL. So frustrating to have that done to a guy who has done everything you asked him to do while developing him for years. Could very easily see him struggle in Stockton for a while because of this. Then when a call up opportunity comes up... someone else gets it cause he hasn't played well. Of course, everyone will say he has to have a better attitude but it is ridiculous to think a team can just treat any prospect however they want and expect them to just keep positive and keep producing. It's supposed to be always earned, never given... he's earned it. Brouwer, lazar, F. Hamilton have not earned it.

Rather than Stajan, I think the real fly in the ointment is Lazar. He hasn’t earned a role either by performance or seniority. Maybe he gets a point for being right-handed, but if waivers weren’t considered he should be in Stockton right now and Jankowski would split the 4C role with his mentor Stajan.

Hmmm.....guess Gulutzan really wants Stajan to have 1st dibs in a top 12 spot.

It definitely is going to suck really bad if it's at the expense of Jankowski.

If Janko's playing though and all it means is that guys like Hathaway or Freddie are pressboxed or not on the team and/or Lazar also starts in the pressbox, it's not totally bad.

For Janko to go down Brad would have to make the roster move. There is nothing in Tre's tenure with the Flames that makes me think he would do this. I'd be willing to bet that Janko stays with the big club as his performance through training camp has merited

Put Jankowski on wing with Bennett and Jagr. 4th line is Glass Stajan Versteeg. Brouwer and Hamilton in press box and waive Lazar. Lazar has shown nothing.

Mostly by the Flames moving on from the likes of Hamilton and Lazar. He gets time with experienced players like Stajan, heck I could even see them subbing them out depending on the opponent. Jankowski should be on the NHL roster, and if it takes the cutting of a tweener then I am all for it. I think Glass has earned a spot too, but if it came down to Glass or Jankowski, I take Jankowski. What I don't want to see is the Flames give up a completely viable asset for no other reason that to give a kid a chance that may or may not work out. If they find a trade for Stajan to get something back to fit him then fine, but waiving or calling the coaching staff "biased" for preferring Stajan just doesn't give him enough credit.

edit: or trading Brouwer could work too

They don't like doing this. I don't remember if it was Gulutzan or Treliving saying that once you move a developing centre player to the wing it's like turning a cucumber to a pickle, there's no way back from there. It was said about Bennett; but I am sure the same line of thinking applies to Jankowski.

Jankowski will make the team. In any case I don't see how the Jagr signing impacts that decision as they do not play the same position. The Jagr signing puts Brouwer and Lazar or one of the other extra players in peril of not making the team.

St. Louis is looking for a right wing, perhaps there is a potential deal there.

If the Brouwer trade happens, it's making room for a guy who has forced his way in (Jankowski). Just like Treliving said he would.

My money is on Janko playing on Wednesday.

Are you sure? I'd love to see/hear those quotes. Treliving was on with Toronto radio last week (posted in a thread here) saying how guys like Seguin were fine starting at wing then moving to center.

They have to do something with Jankowski- either make room for him on the NHL roster or deal him. If he gets sent down again he’s going to be upset and it’s hard to blame him after he’s waited patiently and excelled in both college and the AHL.
