At the same age, johansen already had a couple near point per game seasons and was then traded for a cornerstone defensemen in Seth jones.
We need to reign back the expectations here. Janko put up similar stats in the A. He just doesn't have the same offensive profile as these guys.
I'm a fan of Janko, but he's going to need to be focused on defence first, and chip in when time permits. He's not going to be an offensive game breaker.

Lol. I even said it was a stretch. I didnt say i expected it. The kid is a late bloomer.
What would you say his absolute ceiling is using a comparable?

I like the RyJo comparision as a ceiling. Why is anyone wasting their time pointing to stats to determine Jankowski's upside? They just don't apply normally to him due to his unique development curve. He is offensively talented, plain and simple. Being defensively responsible hasn't suddenly put a cap on his offensive ceiling.

I don't think his development curve is that unique. He's a great prospect and has an NHL future. Most players don't break into the league before his age unless they have special offensive gifts. Ryjo and Thornton have been amongst the games best at different times, and their curve is normally reserved for those kind of talents.
It's not meant to be an insult here. Breaking into the NHL at age 23 in more of a bottom six role is pretty typical. I don't think his overall offensive game is consistent with the buzz at the draft. I'm going to continue to look at backlund as being the high end comp, and that's a pretty exciting future, and potentially the exact player that may need replacing at the end of the year.

Ok but I said absolute ceiling and I also said he falls somewhere in between that and a decent 3rd line C. So where am I off? He is almost certainly not going to be JT good but it is not impossible.

Just seems a bit sensationalized is all. Thornton is one of the greatest players of the last generation.
It would be like saying (about a rookie) that his potential is somewhere between Gretzky and your beer league buddy. Both trajectories are technically possible.
The chances Jankowski ever becomes even close to a Thornton level player as so remote that's why your comment was responded to the way it was. It's the type of comment that's ripe for mocking by fans of rival teams because of how it comes off regardless of actual intent / meaning.

The typical career trajectory for players like joe Thornton are much different than jankos. Exceptional players with exceptional skill sets for e their way on to the team well before age 23. If we are arguing absolute upsides no matter his small the probability, them we can't really cap with 100 percent certainty anyone's max upside. Maybe in a season where he is used in a specific way and gets all the breaks with amazing line, ages he pieces together a few point per game seasons, but he's not going to be that consistent year to year MVP contender that we would see with a player like joe Thornton.
It's a more interesting conversation actually talking about jankos skills and what they likely are going to approximate to. Somebody said Anisimov, and that one feels right too. If Janko turns into that we should be really happy.

This is hilarious. It's nearly impossible to be wrong with this prediction.

Glad someone brought up Jumbo. Watching Janko reminds me of an early on Joe Thorton.
I'm not saying Janko is the next coming of.. they ha very different paths to the NHL, well one still needs to make the bigs. It the size and style of game is certainly comparable.
It would be a long shot for Janko to reach that level, but the style of play is what intrigues me.

I think the idea that Jankowski could have a very good year in assists along with some goals isn't that far off. Obviously Thornton's peak years (2006-2010) came when power play scoring inflated point totals leaguewide, but on either side of those years what you have is a 30G / 50A type player. Thornton's still a tier higher than that as a 35G / 65A player some years (2003) outside of those PP inflated years - so it's probably not what dissentowner was going for. But yeah, I don't think 30G / 50A is a target completely outside of Jankowski's overall skill level in the perfect situation if his development doesn't stall. Realistically, even 20G / 30A would be a home run for him but I don't think that's a ceiling. I imagine Kopitar or RyJo are all more realistic absolute ceilings - legitimate number one centers.

Janko's year is going to be limited because he is behind Monny, Bennett and Bachs. His 5 on 5 ice time will be under 10 minutes a night with no pp time. Hard to light it up offensively with that ice time. Look for a solid development year and maybe 10 g 20 a.

I know what he was getting at, but he seemed to be being obtuse when not understanding why some took issue with the comment.
I think Jankowski might show some good playmaking prowess at the pro level as well, but the fact remains, anytime you throw out the name of a prolific player in loosely trying to peg the ceiling of a rookie, it's going to sound overzealous. Thornton is one of most premier playmakers of the last generation as well as high up there in that regard all-time.
In either case, with the way the core of this team has been assembled since he was drafted, he's pretty much found money for us at this point. If we didn't manage to land Monahan and Bennett and have Backlund turn into the player is now, there could have been a lot more pressure and expectation on Janko at this point. As it is now, he's able to slide in under the radar a bit more and doesn't have those lofty expectations on him. Seems like the right position for him to flourish in.

Saying Janko will develop into a player as good as Joe Thornton is pretty much doing the same thing people make fun of Oilers fans for.
Robbie Schremp? We need to be better than this.

And when he doesn't, our well educated and patient fan base will turn on him.
So either way, let the kid develop and then see.

Woo finally found the Jankowski thread! I was interested what everyone thinks his floor would be. I'd say Joe Colbourn, although I'm not sure Jankowski has low enough hockey sense and effort levels to ever fall that far.

Congrats on finding the SpeakJankowskeasy. I think Jankowski's floor is basically prime Riley Sheahan (the 36 point 3C on a playoff team) although it's looking like he might be a superior goal scorer. If Jankowski is moved to wing in a more offensive role as a rookie I think we might have our very own Nino Niedderreitter.
