Can't say I'm a huge fan, but it's looking like the opening night roster.
That just means you will most likely see Hathaway & Jankowski play on a line together on Saturday.

Bartowski played well from all accounts last game so not surprising he sticks with Stone.

Hathaway is in tough to make this roster. He is probably the worst of all the options vying for that last spot.

Have to think Hathaway is as good as gone to Stockton unless the Flames demote Freddie, and let's be honest, that's not happening.

Didn't realize that acquiring Dougie meant giving up a roster spot to his brother but that's apparently the case. Too bad.

Preseason looked like a total lack of effort. Some of the vets need a stiff kick. Gully needs to let them know this will no longer be tolerated. Don't give me this BS that preseason doesn't count. This team has already adopted a culture of "who cares". We'll see who shows up on Wed.

Agreed about the lack of effort. The concerning thing is that it's difficult, if not impossible, to just flip the switch. The intensity has to be ramped up so that they're ready to start the season. If the last pre-season game is anything like this one I'll be very disappointed.

Hathaway needs to be sandpaper out there. Run out and just grab someone and get it going. Make the other team mad at you. That's his job and why he was effective last season.

If Janko isn't playing vs the Oilers I would lose all hope in the coaching staff to make the correct most simplistic decisions. This team needs more scoring and skill up front, let's sit the 6'4 centre who plays a two way game with great hands and goal scoring and passing ability for Stajan and Brouwer! Mind boggingly if he doesn't start, tired of seeing veterans on this team get a free ride every season. If Bouma was still here he'd be playing over Janko too.

Is it the opening night roster, or is the coach sending a message to the entire group who badly underperformed the night before?

Elliotte Friedman is not worried about the Flames on the basis of their pre-season performance. He seems quite convinced that they will be fine and have a great year.

I would assume as much. He's not going to specifically punish the players that were not responsible for such a lackluster effort.

That's not what he said. He said a number of things, including:
  1. He's not worried about the team's motivation, and that Gaudreau in particular is fired up after last year's first round loss (that was in response to a question as to whether the team would have motivation problems will all of the key players locked up long term);
  2. There's no reason to freak out over wins and losses in the preseason; it's about how you play the games, not whether the team wins or loses; in particular...
  3. That the games that matter are the last couple of "dress rehersal" games. He acknowledged that they were bad last night, and will be interested in seeing how they do against Winnipeg, as Gulutzen was clearly not impressed with last night's performance;
  4. He's not troubled that Glass and Jankowski have been the team's best players. You have a guy trying to stay in the league and one trying to push his way in, and they should be coming out with the most fire; and
  5. When asked if Smith was on the way to being Elliott 2.0, he said he's not worried about Smith and thinks he'll be good for the Flames this season.

but he never gave the team a clear "they'll be fine and have a great year".

So, does Jankowski make the team? In my opinion, he clearly deserves to stay. Even if he has to play wing I think that's a better option than sending him down. He doesn't have much more to prove at the AHL level.

No question he's made the team IMO. People are reading too much into him finally getting a night off. They weren't going to play him every single preseason game

I think he'll get the occasional night off early in the season just like Tkachuk did but he's shown too much not to make the team.

Do you believe from this clip that Friedman believes the Flames will not do well this season or that coaches, management and fans should be worried?

I stand by my representation of his opinion of the Flames.

It is preseason however, at some point people have to be getting concerned with what is going on. It would be nice to have more positives to draw on. To think we can pull out a stinker like last night and all of a sudden things will be different on Wednesday is being optimistic.

A successful preseason is not indicative of a successful season, and a poor preseason is not indicative of a poor season. While I would like the Flames to be winning right now, it truly does not matter and has no bearing on our season. The point where fans should get concerned (if we still look bad) is around the 5-10 game mark of the regular season, IMO.

Wins and losses in the preseason mean nothing but effort and execution does. The first few games were excusable since they had so many rookies playing.
Last night, they should have dominated or even looked slightly better the Canucks.

Our goaltending was easy pickings for the Ducks, our team wasn't, we were actually a very strong playoff team by the end of the season if we got even average goaltending.
