Speaking of Poirier, I'm surprised he didn't play last night... He could have used the ice time.. Wheres Monahan?

I understand for sure. But the games I am referring to are ones where it is almost exclusively prospects and wannabes playing.
They look like they know what is expected of them for systems.
The Flames kids and wannabes, look like they have no clue where they are supposed to be on a breakout or where to be in either zone.

I think Glen's system is fairly complex and not easy to pick up in a week of training camp. It took 6 weeks for the pro's to figure it out last year.

So whats so uncomplicated about recent multiple time stanley cup teams like LA and Chicago that that their new players and prospects easily pick it up?
Just seems off to me the difference in structure.

A couple players picking up a system is different than a whole team...Those teams had the same system for multiple years with their core.

There could be any sorts of reasons why LA and Chicago can pick it up easier. Their coach's might be able to communicate it better, or it could be a simpler structure. It just feels to me that our prospects/pros struggle with picking up Gulutzan's system for a few weeks.

Chicago as an organization has been under Quenvilles coaching for how long? The entire system has been familiarized with it for her w many years now.
L.A , that's different. Sutter's system is not complex, and we will see how close Stevens system is to that of his mentor this year. We don't know if the Kings will struggle under a new coach or not until we see it.
Flames have had the disservice of chewing through 3 vastly different coaching strategies in the last five or six years. Of course you're going to see struggles throughout organizationally .

Agreed, and that help contribute to our hot garbage pre-season games. I'm hoping the real roster will look remarkably better since they are used to the system.

Who says they easily pick it up? You been watching LA and CHI preseason games closely?

Mic-drop line from #Flames coach Glen Gulutzan: "The team that played last night practised harder today than they played yesterday."

Fear is a great motivator. It just doesn't show up on time.

Fringe NHLers shouldn't need outside motivation to play hard in preseason. If they do then they're probably not worthy of an NHL spot.

You're right, but the indications are that this is what happened. They played poorly so showed up this morning and worked harder. Why? Fear of getting cut most likely.
Which, again to your point, likely means they aren't worthy of and won't likely get an NHL spot.
That being said, there would have been some guys from last night that either have already shown management/coaches more that would get a pass or simply have a longer rope. Guess we'll find out Saturday.

Other teams are using the preseason to evaluate players, establish chemistry, line combinations and be ready for opening night.
If the Flames are using preseason to learn the system and not get injured then that's on Gulutzan. Very unproductive preseason last year, same thing so far this year.

Wow sounds like you've done a bit of reasearch. Why don't you share and elaborate as to which teams have better established their expected full time lines 3 games into the pre-season and just how they've established chemistry and evaluated better than Calgary.
What a vague, unverifiable notion.
Last year it was an entirely different system. This year we haven't seen our full line up other than the partial one opening night which was their first time engaging in game-play this year.
This post is beyond overdramatic and over-stated.
It's already been established the last few preseason games will have the full lineup to try and get rolling. I'd wait until at least one of those games is played before rolling out posts like this

What I didn't like is that they've been out worked in both games I've seen and they've lost the board battles. There is no excuse for this.

Agreed. Gulutzan seemed to be implying last night that we didn't take them seriously because their NHL roster is in China and we were up 3-1 after the first.

Outside Janko, Dube, Lomberg and Valimaki none of the kids are really making a strong case to crack the lineup.
Killington looks good, but he did make some boneheaded decisions too like that blind pass into the crease that almost ended up as a tap in. I still think he needs more time in the AHL.
Dube and Valimaki probably will get more out of additional seasoning, No point rushing them as they both project higher than where the obvious holes are in the lineup. I like Valimaki a lot better than Stone in the limited views I've had. It might be good for him to dominate in the CHL or AHL. I see Kulak getting the last spot on D in Calgary.
Janko might start on wing, to ease him in. I think there is nothing left for him to prove outside of the NHL. I think Mangiapane looks good because of Janko.
Lomberg, Hathaway and the PTOs are all interchangeable on the 4th line. I'd give the edge to Hathaway but he better be aware of the competiton.

Well lets see when they have a lineup that has all of Ferland, Tkachuk, Brouwer, and Hathaway in it. There are very specific guys on the team that are counted on to win the board battles and very few of them have played at the same time. Also the early games in the preseason are where the vets aren't really working their hardest. That said no excuse for the Cramarossa types for not showing up. The fringe NHLers need to be bringing it from the beginning if they wanna push for a spot.
All I really take from it is that guys like Cramarossa aren't really pushing hard enough to win a spot. And guys like Gio, Brodie, Brouwer, Backlund and Frolik haven't amped it up yet. Way too early in preseason to be reading much into it.

Interesting that you didn't mention Anderson. Which I think is partially because he's been pretty steady back there and not at all flashy. I do like his game though and he seems to have some hockey IQ. Think he could be a real good player.
