Which was? Here were the players taken between #47th overall and Ruzicka:
Don't forget Freddie Hamilton signed a two year one-way deal. He actually did have to earn a roster spot by having a great camp last year.
I joked when we traded for him that if it gave them an excuse to protect someone besides Brouwer, and allow Brouwer to be taken, it was worth the 2nd in isolation for
just that.

Which is fine, but things change when others outplay you on the ice.

If they didn't think Lazar would make the team I don't think they would have given him 2 years. They expect him to make the team. Is it possible he has the worst camp ever and they have to re-evaluate? I guess.

If he has a mediocre camp and each of Shinkaruk and Poirier and Jankowski and Foo and Brouwer and Stajan have gangbusters camps, then you should still re-evaluate. That's sort of the point of camp. Now Foo/Janko are waiver exempt so you could temporarily send them down unlike Lazar, but there has to be some degree of meritocracy. Lazar doesn't need to have the worst camp ever to not be a lock. He has a foot in the door, but that's the extent of it. Like I said earlier, waivers aren't the only avenue for a player to not make a team.
